What to expect when moving with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK

If you find yourself moving soon, there’s an important decision lingering – move the belongings yourself or hire professional movers?

It’s an age-old question that people have juggled for years, and one that people often struggle to make. There are some common misconceptions about hiring professional movers that often push people to move the belongings themselves, but is it really worth it?

Moving is already stressful enough, but pile on the need to find friends and family to do the heavy lifting with you, rent your own truck, ensure your items are packed away safely so you don’t damage them yourself …  the to-do list can pile up just as quickly as the stress.

The old saying “you get what you pay for” applies to the idea of hiring professional movers, and when you hire TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, you can feel good knowing you’re getting top-notch movers in the industry.

Free moving estimates- in-home or over the phone

Our Customer Service Representatives are ready to assist you in figuring out just what it will take for one of our moving teams to help you and what the cost will look like for your move! The best part of these moving estimates? They’re free.

How much does TWO MEN AND A TRUCK cost?

Each TWO MEN AND A TRUCK moving location is independently owned and operated, with each setting their own specific rates for moving. A majority of our franchise moving locations charge hourly for local moving and by weight for a move that is long distance. To find out more, contact the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK location nearest you for a free estimate and costs.

Packing options and supplies

Need packing supplies? We’ve got plenty of them! Need packing done and don’t want to do it yourself? We can help with that, too! Our movers can come out and do all of the packing for you prior to move day, or drop off the proper moving boxes and packing supplies to ensure your items stay organized and safe throughout your move.

An in-home walkthrough with the movers

Prior to your moving team getting to work, they’ll do a walkthrough of your home. This allows them to see the landscape of rooms so they can bring the proper moving materials to keep your belongings safe and secure during the moving process.

This also helps your team know where they’ll put extra protection on doors or walkways, and what furniture needs to be padded and stretch wrapped before loading into the truck.

A walkthrough of your new home location

A necessary step in the moving process is your move team getting to know your new location before they begin unloading your belongings. They’ll want to identify key rooms, like the master bedroom or spare bedroom, so they know what boxes and furniture will belong to each room when unloading.

Final walkthrough of the home and truck

Here your movers will want to go through the home with you to ensure everything is where it needs to go. If something isn’t in the correct spot, be sure to let them know before they leave! You’ll also want to do a final look inside the truck to ensure no items, furniture, or boxes are left on the truck.

Time to leave a review

After each move, our customers receive a customer satisfaction survey emailed to them. We greatly appreciate our customers filling these out and telling us how we did- good and bad! This helps us train and reward our teams accordingly. Reviews left on sites such as Google, Facebook, and Yelp are also greatly appreciated to help spread the word about the move you received with us.

We can tell you all about our moving services and how we can help you, but nothing speaks louder than the words of our own satisfied customers. To hear it directly from the source, check out some of our customer testimonials below.

What’s it like to be a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® mover?

DSC_0323

-Written by Erik Sargent

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK teams are fully submerged into the busy moving season all around the country and internationally, as our professional moving teams are working harder than ever to move people to their next steps in life.

Being a home mover is an incredibly taxing profession, and at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, we strive to hire the best team members to enter our customers’ homes and move their most prized possessions. It’s a rewarding experience for our moving teams as they establish relationships with customers and truly lend them a helping hand with one of life’s most stressful events.

We spoke with team members from our Pasadena, Cali., location to find out just what goes into a day in the life as a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK mover or driver.

Here’s what they had to say!

DSC_0378How does a typical day start as a mover/driver?

“Usually, we just prep our trucks and make sure we have the right equipment for the upcoming move. We call the customer ahead of time and ask them if there is anything they need like boxes, or if they have changed their mind on something last second so we can adjust and bring the proper equipment.”
Jose Morales

How long does it take to get ready?

“It varies, depending on whether the truck needs something special like boxes, or if the truck needs to be swept out. It all varies, but it’s usually between 15 and 20 minutes, 30 minutes at the most to get ready to go.” – Abraham Baustista

How long does a typical day for a mover/driver last?

“It all varies on a lot of different things. Usually for us, the average is anywhere from six to 12 hours on a normal day. What changes it up is anything from someone having only a little bit of items to longer walks, apartment moves and condo moves, and parking difficulties, which all affect the time.” – Jose Morales

Favorite parts of your job?

“I would have to say the people that work here. I do have a lot of experience working at different places, and I can say that from day one when I started here, I was a little nervous because I didn’t know anyone. But the thing about this company is they do a very good job of just getting you used to the environment, the people, and literally by my fourth or fifth day, I knew everyone. That’s just my favorite thing – the comradery in the DSC_0388office is what keeps us going.” – Jabrion Burnside

Challenges on the job?

“Definitely the heat. Lifting is not easy, and you’re already producing a lot of heat as is. When you add in the sun on you and how hot the truck can get, it sometimes just wears on you and can slow you down. Also, since we are in California and specifically the Los Angeles area, traffic can get really, really bad.” – Abraham Bautista

What do you do to make customers feel comfortable during a home move?

“I would say the biggest thing is getting to know the customer. At the end of the day, you have a service you are performing for them, but nothing is better than actually knowing you on a more personal level, because then they trust you more and you trust them more, and it adds to the overall experience of the move.” – Jabrion Burnside

There you have it! Moving is one of the tougher jobs you’ll find, but when you have hardworking professionals like these three young men – and the team members at all 350  TWO MEN AND A TRUCK locations – it can make your moving process a little bit easier.

The perks of hiring professional movers

TMAT447

-Written by Erik Sargent

Moving can be one of life’s most stressful events, filled with chaos and emotion as you relocate all of your belongings from one place to the next. There are a variety of reasons as to why people move, but one thing remains the same with each – it is a process that requires planning, heavy lifting, and patience.

Many people think that if they use a professional moving service, they are going to end up paying far too much, and they try to do everything on their own. Doing a move on your own is not only stressful, but can cause damage to your belongings, damage to you, and can take an extended amount of time.

With a moving company like TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, you avoid all of these hassles – and we put to rest the myth that hiring professional movers will break the bank! For over 30 years at locations all across the country, we have been helping people move forward in their life by providing top-notch moving services. Each one of our moving teams is trained to handle moves with the highest level of care, and they are professionally trained and uniformed when they arrive at your door.

We’ve compiled a list of some of the top reasons you should choose a professional moving company like TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, and we hope you think of us next time you decide to relocate!

The benefits of professional movers

Hiring professional movers means you are putting your items in the hands of people who are properly trained on how to move objects of all shapes and sizes. From furniture and appliances to safes and pianos, our movers know how to handle it all.

Trying to move large objects like furniture or safes can not only be dangerous to do on your own, but can cause damage to everything if they are not handled correctly. Leave the heavy lifting to us!

You can rest assured that when our moving teams handle your items, each object will be padded and stretched wrapped to provide maximum protection from one location to the next.

Reasonable pricing

The perception of professional moving services is that it’s going to cost a fortune, but that is simply not the case, as there are a variety of factors that determine the price of a move. On average, a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK move typically costs $895. This is a price that must be considered when you take into consideration that you don’t have to do any of the work.

The time you save vs. doing it yourself

When you try to handle a home move yourself, there’s no telling how long it could take you. From trips back and forth to asking people to help you, you are taking on a major task if you do it alone.

With TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, a home move typically takes around 5.34 hours – that is getting everything from one place padded and stretch wrapped, loaded onto our 26 ft. moving trucks, and unloaded at your new home – just like that!

Don’t take our word on why using professional movers is a great option – just listen to what our customers have to say!

“I’ve moved five times in the past, all by myself with the help of some friends and family. I was dreading the process of moving again, and decided to hire professional movers. This was the best decision made about this move! It was fantastic having a team of professionals helping move our family’s things carefully and securely. The team was efficient, thoughtful, and knocked it out of the park. I definitely recommend TWO MEN AND A TRUCK to others now.” – Erik, Savannah, GA

“The entire move was handled as expected without surprises. While I was initially surprised to see an estimate for two trucks, I soon saw that the quote was spot-on. Looking back, there’s simply no way that I could have saved any money by attempting to move two truckloads and two cars from Atlanta to New Orleans by myself. The moving crew was professional, courteous, meticulously careful, and exceptionally hard-working. We have a number of irreplaceable antiques and they were handled separately with incredible attention to their care. It gave us peace of mind to know that our interstate move was expedited without the need for sharing a truck or warehousing our belongings, and to have the same crew load and unload added a welcome familiarity.” Chris, Gwinnett North, GA

“My movers – Daniel and Daniel – did a phenomenal job moving me into a new apartment. They took time to inventory all my items, moved furniture around in the new place until it was just where I liked it, and were kind and courteous the entire time. My move came in under the estimate too! Overall, the experience was excellent and I’ll never be moving myself again! Thank you!” – Kay, Lansing, MI

Utilizing space to create storage in your new college dorm room

TMAT163

Written by Anna Stephens

For many college freshmen, the transition to college is a massive shock because of all the free time you get in between classes, the cafeteria food, and the distance from home. But why doesn’t anyone warn you about the shock of having no storage when you move in to your dorm? Most dorms only have a bed, a dresser, and a small closet. Throw your roommate into the mix, and you’re left with half a closet and two drawers to store all of your belongings in. For some, this is manageable, but for those who tend to over pack (most people!), this simply isn’t enough space.

Our advice is to ensure everything you own has its own space, so the floor doesn’t become an ocean of clothes and random items. Creating enough storage takes serious creativity, and from personal experience and our own research, we’ve created handy storage ideas that will make your dorm room seem bigger.

  1. Sneaky storage. Areas underneath the bed and under the futon are full of storage potential. Depending on how high the bed and futons are off the ground, you can place smaller boxes or storage containers in the space under them filled with essential items. As you plan for your room, note the ideal color, material, and size box for this area. If you love DIYs, use a cardboard box and decorate it with wrapping paper. Another tip is to use labels for these boxes, as it’s easy to forget where everything is stored amongst the move-in chaos.
  2. Bathroom storage. Get a plastic shower caddy to keep all of your toiletries together. This will make it much easier and faster on your trips to and from the bathroom. It’ll also keep all small bathroom items, like toothpaste and shampoo bottles, organized and out of the way.
  3. Closet storage. Maximize the space in your closet by creating a two-level closet. You can purchase a closet rod that comes with hooks to attach to the top rod. This way, your top closet rod can be for your tops, and the bottom rod can be for your bottoms. Another handy hanging item is an over-the-door hanging shoe organizer. All of your shoes will be off the ground and your floors will be clear. Lastly, you can purchase foldable hanging sweater shelves so you have more space to hang items in your closet. This is convenient for foldable clothes that are too bulky to put in your dresser.
  4. Night stand/TV stand storage. Small night stands/TV stands are inexpensive and easy to assemble. These often are paired with square foldable storage bins that go in the different compartments of the night stand. They come in several colors, so they’ll match your décor and offer more places to store your stuff.
  5. Seat storage. Purchase furniture and décor that will serve more than one purpose. You can buy inexpensive cubicle ottomans that open in just about any color and material. These are great places to store items, and also serve as a comfy chair or foot rest.
  6. Drawer storage. In the dresser, you can place foldable dividers so you have separate compartments within each drawer. This will maximize the efficiency of each drawer so you can fill the entire space.

Our best advice is to look for deals along the way. Make a list far in advance of the items you need to purchase for your dorm and make a budget. Scope out different stores for special college deals and do some research online. Remember: the cleaner the space is, the bigger it’ll feel.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is here to help with all of your college moving and storage needs. We also offer professional packing services and boxes and supplies to help take the stress out of moving.

6 things people do to complicate their move

6 things people do to complicate their move

Whether across town or to a different country, moving can be one of the most stressful things you will do in your life. There are a number of things you need to do and take care of, some of which may or may not be in your control. And if you are a first-time mover, there is a good chance your inexperience will cause you to make costly and timewasting mistakes that end up making your move more difficult than it could have been.

Here is a quick look at some of the most common things people do to complicate their move and what you can learn from them.

1. Deciding to do everything themselves

Many people underestimate the amount of work involved in moving. They are confident they can do everything themselves, without letting movers, or even friends, enter the picture. True, if you have moved in the past and do not have too many things to pack, you may be able to execute a successful move on your own. But what do you think will happen if you injure your back on moving day, carrying heavy boxes down the stairs? Or say, the rental truck you hired is not big enough to load all your belongings?

Also, driving a huge moving truck is not the same as driving a car. You have to pay special attention to the weighing station and overhead clearance signs, while also keeping in mind  the truck has a larger turning radius and will need more time to come to a full stop when you apply the brakes.

2. Hiring the first mover they come across

Hiring the wrong moving company can cause you a lot of undue complications on moving day. To avoid getting trapped in such situations, thoroughly research your moving company before signing the contract. Ask your family and friends for recommendations. Never forget that a low-price quote does not always translate to a good experience. Go online to find out what customers have to say about their experiences with the mover. Do they regularly double-book to land more jobs? Are their employees permanent staff and not temporary employees? Will they give you a free estimate or better yet, a thorough walk-through of your home for an accurate estimate? Are there any hidden charges? Do they have a license from the Department of Transportation? Do they have enough insurance? Can they provide references?

Taking the time to research and speak with reputable, professional movers will ensure a stress-free move and overall great experience.

3. Failing to plan the move in advance

Planning a move well in advance will give you enough time to research all the variables involved and make the correct decisions. In addition to packing, moving entails a whole lot of other steps, including arranging for the utilities to be switched, requesting the necessary paperwork from your kids’ schools, arranging for the transfer of your medical records, booking flight tickets, submitting change of address forms, and of course, finding the new rental or perfect purchase you’ll call home. Most experts advise keeping a moving folder to track all paperwork related to the move. Remember, the better you prepare, the easier your move will be.

Don’t forget that most moves happen during summer before the new school year starts. As a result, most moving companies are extremely busy during this season. Failure to plan the move beforehand can leave you scrambling for a good (and available) mover with just a couple of days left for the big day. You don’t need me to tell you what that will do to your stress levels!

4. Not setting aside enough time for packing

Packing always takes more time than you think. People who wait until the last minute to start packing are left with no option, but to dump everything in the moving boxes without sorting or purging. This results in paying extra money to the movers for transporting stuff they are never going to use.

Moving offers you a great chance to cull the unnecessary stuff you have accumulated over the years. Discard, sell, or give away all the clothes, books, furniture, and appliances you haven’t used in the last year. This will reduce your unpacking time and save you a lot of valuable storage space in your new home. Who knows, selling your gently used items may even earn you some extra cash in the bargain!

Ideally, you should begin packing for your move as soon as you finalized the moving date. Start by boxing up what you don’t use on a daily basis or will not need until after the move, such as seasonal clothes, holiday dishes, and so on.

5. Skimping on packing supplies

Getting cheap, used cardboard boxes from your neighborhood grocery store might seem like a good idea at first – until the first one falls apart on your stairs on moving day. Or your wedding china fails to make the trip intact.

Invest in good quality packing supplies, such as strong, clean boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, moving blankets, and so on. This will save you a lot of stress and headache come moving day.

6. Not packing an essentials moving box

An essentials box containing items you will need for the first few days in your new home or apartment will greatly simplify your moving process. All your jewelry, valuables, and important paperwork should also be packed in the essentials box and carried with you. If you have not done so, you may very well have to run around unpacking a dozen different cardboard boxes just to find toilet paper, plates, glasses, kitchen utensils, and towels to get you through the first night. Trust me when I say that this is not something you want to look forward to, especially after a particularly difficult day of hauling heavy boxes and driving hundreds of miles. Nope!

Moving is already a dreaded event in many peoples’ lives. You have to coordinate schedules, pack your belongings, and find a crew to move you if you decide to hire a company.
