Four quick and easy tips to help you navigate through moving day

TMAT211

Now that 2021 is here, maybe you’ve decided this is the year to finally complete that home move you’ve been dreaming about – which then leads to this great question: Now what?

If you know there’s a move in your future, try hiring professional movers! Moving day can be chaotic and difficult to tackle on your own, but with the help of professional movers like TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, moving day can become a lot less stressful and a lot more enjoyable as we take care of all the hard work and heavy lifting for you!

From packing to finalizing the sale of your home, buying a new home, hiring the movers, and so on – it can be overwhelming. A little bit of planning goes a long way for having a successful moving day, and we’ve come up with a few quick and easy tips for you to follow to eliminate as much stress as possible.

Protect your old house

Even though you’re leaving this home, you’ll still want to leave it in good shape for the next owners. Thankfully, we’re prepared and ready to help with this, as we provide items like floor runners, door jambs, carpet shields, and railing covers to help keep your home protected and avoid damages.

Make sure that when moving day comes, there is a clear path inside and outside for the movers to safely navigate. If you are moving during the winter months in a place where it’s snowy, be sure the sidewalks and driveways are properly shoveled to cut down on time and to improve safety.

Get an essentials bag for your new home

With the process of moving, there’s a solid chance that everything you own is probably packed away and ready for transport. This also means it might not be easy to get to when you arrive at the new home.

Pack a bag of essentials to get you through the first couple of nights when you arrive at your new home that can hold you over until you begin the process of unpacking. Toothbrushes, chargers, batteries, toilet paper – anything like this is a good idea to have handy.

Have food and drinks readily available

Moving day is a lot of, well, moving! Since the fridge is probably cleared out, having a bag of snacks and a cooler with some drinks is always helpful – or maybe you just hop on the phone and order some pizza!

If you have kids, get them involved

While you’re busy taking care of the important details required for your move, it’s crucial not to keep your kids in the dark about the entire process either. It can be a difficult process for them as they are transitioning to a new home and possibly new town or school, so it’s a good idea to make them feel like they are involved in the packing and moving process.

Keep your move organized and on track with these 6 overlooked moving essentials

TMATAUGUST040

Above all things that are important when moving to a new home, arguably none rank higher than organization. If you are organized before, during, and after your move – there’s a good chance your move will go even smoother.

We’ve completed more than 7.5 million moves over our 35 years as movers, and time and time again, we’ve seen that organization is the key to moving. However, this is much easier said than done. From taking care of all your bills and utilities at your old home to packing, cleaning, hiring movers, and so on – there is a lot to think about. These all generally are at the top of mind when preparing to move, but what about some of those overlooked essentials you might be forgetting?

Generally, these “overlooked moving essentials” are things you’ll want with you on moving day when you arrive at your new home. They are all of varying degrees of importance, but all things you don’t want to go without!

Moving Checklist

Seems simple enough, right? It’s sometimes so simple that customers forget to do it! Create a plan for how you want to attack your upcoming move so you have something to follow throughout the process.

If you don’t feel like creating your own, no worries – we’ve created one for you.

Plastic Bags

Plastic bags are cheap, easy, and versatile on moving day. Whether you need them for carrying new items that didn’t end up getting packed away or they’re just filling in for some quick trash duty, there is always a use for plastic bags. Keep a stash ready so you can quickly access one if needed.

Batteries/Chargers

What doesn’t use some type of battery or charger these days? While chargers are still needed for items like phones, laptops, or tablets, there are still a large number of items that run on batteries: remotes, clocks, and varying home appliances.

Have a supply of batteries handy should you need them.

Cleaning Supplies

It’s no secret that moving in or out of a home can create a bit of a mess. That’s why it’s not a bad idea to have some cleaning supplies close and ready should there be a mess that occurs during the moving process. Items like rags and sponges, Clorox wipes, toilet cleaner, cleaning spray, laundry soap, and more are all good items to have on moving day.

Toilet paper/Paper Towels

Without getting into too much detail, we’ll just say that these fall under the category of “you’d rather have it and not need it.” Buy both in advance.

Tool Kit

Ideally, you could move into your home without any issues. However, that is unlikely to happen, so get a tool kit together that you can have handy so you’re able to make any quick fixes that might be needed once you are moved in.

These are just a few important and often overlooked moving essentials you’ll want to keep in mind as you’re getting ready for moving day. To find more helpful moving tips to make your moving day a success, search through our company blog or visit our website!

Four easy tips to make it through move day

TMATAUGUST164

With so many details to iron out for move day – getting completely packed, finalizing the sale or rental agreement of your new home, hiring professional movers, etc. – it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the stress of the entire process.

However, with a little proper planning ahead of time, it doesn’t have to be that bad!

We’ve been the moving professionals in this space for more than 35 years and have come up with a few tips and tricks that might be helpful in making sure your move day is a success.

If you have children, keep them involved

While you’re busy taking care of the important details required for your move, it’s crucial not to keep your kids in the dark about the entire process either. It can be a difficult process for them as they are transitioning to a new home and possibly new town or school, so it’s a good idea to make them feel like they are involved in the packing and moving process.

For a few ideas on how to boost morale and even some fun ideas for kids on moving day, click here.

Keep your house protected

Although it’s time to move on from your old house, you still want to leave it in good shape for the next owners. Thankfully, when you hire a professional moving company like TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, we provide floor runners, door jambs, carpet shields, and banister and railing covers to keep your home protected.

Make sure that before moving day comes, you clear a path both outside and inside your home so that the movers can safely navigate to and from the moving truck.

Get an essentials bag ready for the new house

There’s a solid chance you’ve packed everything away as you’re getting ready to move. This means that everything you own might not be readily available when you get to the new house.

Pack an essentials bag you can access upon arrival at your new home to hold you over until you can unpack. Anything from toothbrushes to chargers, batters, toilet paper, and more is a good idea.

Have snacks and drinks ready, too

It may seem obvious, but there probably won’t be anything to eat in your fridge at the new house when you show up. Having a snack bag and some drinks is always helpful, or hopping on your phone and ordering a pizza will do the trick.

These are just a few simple and easy ideas that you can follow to get ready for moving day. To view more important moving tips, visit our website.

What moving companies can’t move during your home move

TMAT047.jpg

Busy moving season is nearly upon, and if you’re someone who is preparing to complete a home move, there’s quite a bit to think about in order to keep everything on track.

From hiring professional movers to figuring out packing, ordering packing supplies, and deciding which items are going with you to your new home and which items are going to the trash – it can be a stressful time! One aspect that often gets overlooked when hiring professional moving services is what moving companies cannot move, and this is something you should look into before you start packing.

In order to avoid any confusion or issues when moving day arrives, you’ll want to know the legal regulations and guidelines of what moving companies cannot move so you can make the necessary arrangements for items that can’t be put on a moving truck. With over 30 years of experience in the business, we’ve picked up on most items that can’t be transported by a moving company and put them together for you.

Follow along!

Perishable food items

Any fresh, frozen, or refrigerated foods are banned from our moving trucks so we can avoid any rotting or spoiling odors.

One helpful tip – plan out a couple days’ worth of meals leading up to your moving day so that you don’t have a fridge full of food and can avoid this problem.

Prescription drugs and medications

We do not move prescriptions drugs to avoid and prevent any emergencies where you need to access medications that may have been packed and put onto one of our moving trucks.

Gasoline engines or machines

If you plan on moving items like lawn mowers, grills, smokers, tractors, or mopeds – anything that runs on gasoline – be sure to completely empty them, otherwise our moving teams cannot transport them.

Flammable or explosive items

Under no circumstances can we move any of the following: propane, paint, car batteries, household cleaners, antifreeze, weed killer, or ammunition. Federal law prohibits the transportation of these items.

Plants or animals

In an effort to guarantee the safety and well-being of any pets or plants, we do not transport any living things. For tips on how to handle moving of pets yourself, click here.

Sentimental belongings

Part of being known as the “Movers Who Care” means taking care of your items and treating them as if they were our own, which is why we do not move items such as cash, jewelry, insurance papers, or birth certificates. This ensures these important items are not misplaced or damaged during the moving process.

For more information on what items your franchise location can and cannot move, contact your local TWO MEN AND TRUCK location and they’ll be happy to assist you with any questions.

Save your friends the hassle – leave it up to the moving pros!

TMAT074.jpg

-Written by Erik Sargent

As you can see above, you don’t want to be the one hassling your friends by borrowing their truck for help. The smart choice? Calling TWO MEN AND A TRUCK!

It’s officially moving season and whatever your moving needs may be, the Movers Who Care can handle the move – regardless of the size. We can even help with packing, too! We are in the middle of summer and that means moving season, so each of our locations are fully-staffed and ready to help out.

Save your friend the pain. You’ll both be better off using TWO MEN AND A TRUCK. If you’re going to move, use these money-saving tips to help you get prepared and shave some money off your next move.

Start your packing early

Getting a jump start on your packing will pay off huge during your home relocation. This gives you time to get stuff in the right place, labeled, and will give you a clear idea of just how much is being transported on moving day.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK provides a wide-variety of packing services and packing supplies to make your move easier, which you can see here.

Label your boxes!

Once your items are securely packed in a box, finding them becomes a whole new ballgame. One of the most important steps someone can take during their home move is labeling everything. This organizational tool keeps you in the know with the location of all items you move, and helps the movers know what is happening, too.

Keep what you need, get rid of what you don’t!

The less boxes you have to move on moving day, the easier the entire move will go. If you prepare your move in advance, this will give you time to go through your belongings and ask one important question – do I need this? If you haven’t used something in a year, it’s safe to say you don’t need it.

Toss it! And save the hassle of moving it.

Create a moving checklist

The best way to approach a home move is with a detailed plan. This keeps you on a schedule, gives you a direction, and will help you keep track of everything that is happening in front of you during a time when it’s easy to forget things.

Click here to see our expert TWO MEN AND A TRUCK moving checklist, which we’ve developed using our 30-plus years of moving experience!

Keep your essential items together

Pack your essential items last when completing a home move, and even transport it in your personal vehicle so you have access to them if needed. This way, when you arrive at your new home, you can get the important stuff– like toiletries, chargers, etc. – first. It also prevents these essential items from getting mixed up with stuff that won’t be unpacked right away, and won’t leave you scrambling. When packing boxes, go room by room, keeping like-items together and making sure to label the tops and sides of the boxes so the movers know what room they belong in when getting to your new home. Stay accessible in case your movers aren’t sure where a certain item goes and you’re able to direct them!

Know what movers can and can’t move

Although we are more than happy to help with your move, there are some things we can’t move, and it’s important to keep this in mind as you are preparing. Anything from prescriptions to cleaning products, flammable items, or animals cannot be placed on our moving trucks.

To find out more about what we can and cannot move, click here.

Once boxes are packed, put them in one central area

Saving time means saving money! If your movers can quickly grab boxes and load them into the truck, that’ll make for an easier and more efficient move. If you’re able to, transfer your packed boxes to the garage or living room, and that’ll save your movers from going throughout the house to collect your items, thus saving time during the load process.

What we can’t move during your home relocation

TMAT253.jpg

-Written by Caitlyn Laidler

At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, we’re dedicated to making your moving experience stress-free and successful. To ensure the safety of both our customers and movers, we must follow certain rules and regulations that restrict the transportation of certain items.

In order to avoid conflict and confusion on moving day, we recommend you speak with your local franchise beforehand to ensure you have time to make arrangements to move the items we’re not able to.

Our movers are unable to transport the following:

Flammable, explosive, or corrosive items

Federal law prohibits the transportation of propane, paint, car batteries, antifreeze, household cleaners, weed killer, and ammunition. These items will not be moved under any circumstances.

Gasoline-filled engines or machines

Prior to move in day, make sure to empty any items that run on gasoline. Items such as lawn mowers, grills, tractors, and mopeds must be completely empty in order for our movers to transport them.

Plants and animals

In order to guarantee the safety and well-being of your plants and pets, we do not transport any living thing, including potted plants and fish.

Perishable food

Fresh, refrigerated, and frozen foods are banned from our trucks to prevent rotting and spoiled, unpleasant odors. Plan out your meals the week before the move so you don’t have a fridge full of food on moving day. Or, plan to box and transport in your personal vehicle.

Sensitive or sentimental belongings

We care about your things and take care of them as if they were our own. To ensure your prized possessions and important items are not misplaced during the process, we do not move items such as cash, jewelry, insurance papers, or birth certificates.

Prescription drugs or medications

In order to prevent any emergencies where you may need access to your medications, we do not move prescription drugs.

Reminder: Each franchise has their own policy regarding non-allowable items. For a complete list of items we are not able to move, please contact your local TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® office.

Nine questions to ask your landlord before moving in

TMAT113.jpg

This is a guest post from Avail.com

There’s a lot on your mind when you’re preparing for a move, from what day you can move in to when you’ll receive your keys, where the moving truck can park, and more.

To ensure you’re as prepared as possible, and have as many moving day details to make it a stress-free and efficient day, it’s important to ask your landlord these nine questions ahead of time.

#1 What day can I move in?

It’s best to check with your landlord about what day you’re able to move in. That way, you are both on the same page and you can schedule professional movers ahead of time. It’s recommended to reach out and book your movers as soon as possible, even as early as one month out from the date you’d like to move.

#2 What will you do to prepare the unit before I move in?

Most landlords clean and re-paint in between tenants. We recommend finding out what your landlord plans on doing ahead of time, so you know what condition the place will be in when you move in.

#3 Were the locks changed?

In some locations, it’s a legal requirement for landlords to change the locks in between tenants. Even if it’s not a legal requirement, you can still request that your landlord changes the locks if you prefer.

#4 When will I get my keys?

Of course, you’ll need to know when you can pick up your keys to access your unit for move-in day! We recommend coordinating with your landlord to find out where and when you can pick up your keys. You may want to ask if there are other people who have a copy of the key, or access to your unit.

#5 What doors/elevators should I use? And where can I park my moving truck?

Your landlord will know the best place for your moving truck to be, whether it’s in an alley, on the street, or in a truck dock (at a larger building). You can also find out if there are service elevators for you to use. Be sure to make arrangements for parking and service elevators prior to your movers’ arrival.

#6 What do I do in the case of a lockout?

Before moving in, it’s best to know the lockout procedure. Is there an extra key on site in a lockbox? Is there a 24/7 emergency lockout company you should call? Your landlord will likely have a way for you to remedy the situation, and having this information may come in handy down the road.

#7 Is there a move-in checklist for me to complete?

It’s best practice to fill out a move-in checklist. You’ll mark any existing damage on move-in day. That way, when you move out, you can show the landlord that the damage was already there. This is helpful if you want to receive your full security deposit at the end of the lease.

You can also check to ensure you have all the proper moving essentials, here.

#8 How do I pay first month’s rent?

Typically, landlords expect first month’s rent before you move in. It’s usually a requirement before he or she will hand over a key to you. Make sure you know how to pay rent and when it’s due so you get your keys on time.

#9 What utilities am I responsible for?

You’ll want to set up your utilities before you move in. Gas, electricity, and internet are utilities you’ll want immediately. If you’re responsible for setting these up, your landlord should let you know which companies to reach out to. If not, we recommend asking your landlord for more information.

Next steps

You’ve asked your landlord these questions, and found out your move-in date, so the next step is setting up professional movers. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is here to help.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® expert tips for relocating south

TMAT061

-Written by Erik Sargent

The leaves are changing, the air is crisp, and the television sets are constantly streaming football, basketball, playoff baseball, and hockey, which can only mean one thing – winter is near! For those that live in the northern regions of the country, these are the last few months before the cold weather sets in and we’re all bundled up inside.

For those who aren’t interested in spending that much time in the cold, they often pack up their belongings, hit the road, and relocate to warmer climates for the winter. This can seem like a daunting task, but thankfully, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK is here to help ensure you’re on the beach in no time!

We’ve compiled a few key areas that are important to tackle as you prepare for this journey, and hope it can create a smooth moving process a for you.

Downsizing and organizing

If you’re relocating south – even just temporarily – then you’ll want to be selective of items you take in addition to being organized. Downsizing and eliminating clutter will take an immense amount of stress off when it comes time to actually begin moving, while also saving space and time.

Here are a few important ideas to keep in mind as you downsize and organize your items:

Plan ahead: Make sure you have a plan in place for how you’re going to tackle downsizing, and stick to it. This helps so that when you’re ready to move, you aren’t wasting time trying to determine what to do with unwanted items.

Determine what’s necessary: Examine the items you’re considering moving, and ask yourself if it’s really necessary to be moved. Have you used or even looked at the item in the last year? Did you forget you even had that item? Would you even miss it if it was gone? Ask yourself a few questions to determine if those items are things you could easily part with.

Packing

Effective packing will get your journey south on the right track! Check out our expert packing tips video, compiled from over 30 years of being leaders in the moving industry. Also, remember these important tips as you pack:

Labels: Take the time label everything so you know what’s in each box.

Sort by importance: Make sure your essential items – like chargers and bathroom supplies – are stored together so you can get them right away upon arrival.

No used boxes: Used boxes run a high risk of breaking, which could result in broken items during the move. Check out the available moving boxes we provide when contact your local TWO MEN AND A TRUCK franchise about a move!

Getting you where you need to go!

Now that you’re organized and packed, the final step is completing the move so you can get to warmer weather! The thought of long-distance relocation can make people shudder, but thankfully, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK is here to help!

“Value Flex is ideal for those who need long-distance moving services on a budget, and provides the same great customer service and stress-free moving and packing services customers have come to expect with local moves,” said TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Moving Services Director Lindsey Schaibly. “In exchange for a reduced price, customers are given an increased lead time on delivery. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® celebrates “National Grandparents Day” every day with THE GRANDMA RULE®

TMAT228

-Written by Erik Sargent

Yesterday on Sunday, September 10th, it was “National Grandparents Day”, a day to take the time to recognize our beloved grandparents and all of the wonderful things they bring into our lives.

For us here at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, every day might as well be considered “National Grandparents Day”, because our loyal senior following are a large focus of what we do, and we pride ourselves on easing their transitions as best as possible. From helping with downsizing moves to long-distance relocations, in-home moving, and providing special training to our employees who work with seniors – our goal is to make life easier for our retired friends.

grandmaeb2One of our strongest company core values is THE GRANDMA RULE®, which was created in honor of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® founder Mary Ellen Sheets’ mother, Helen Eberly, or Grandma Eb for short. In the early stages of the company when Mary Ellen was in need of storage space, Grandma Eb allowed her to park trucks in her backyard. She went on to play a huge part in the development of the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® brand, and the THE GRANDMA RULE® still resonates with employees throughout our system.

brian-stern“THE GRANDMA RULE®, to me, exemplifies everything we want and expect out of our employees and ourselves,” said Brian Stern, a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® multi-unit franchisee in Boston, New Jersey, and Maine. “The idea is to treat each and every one of our customers as if they were our grandmother. If we do that, every customer will be treated with respect, patience, and empathy during difficult moving situations.”

THE GRANDMA RULE® highlights the family atmosphere that has been built here at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, and it is a major reason people are drawn to our brand.

lauren-munson“I believe THE GRANDMA RULE® is such an important core value because it truly represents the culture of this company,” said Lauren Trost, the marketing and sales manager for the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® “Chicago 5” locations. “TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® employees not only practice this core value while at work – it is deeply ingrained in their everyday life. Before I started working at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, the Lansing franchise actually moved my grandma. I witnessed a wonderful display of compassion and strength. For several weeks after her move, my grandma could not stop talking about how impressed she was with the two young men who moved her.”

It’s this kind of attention to detail – especially with the senior crowd – that has helped build the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® brand into what it is today. The care and effort we put into helping our older generation move is appealing to customers, and helps them to feel comfortable when we are handling a delicate situation like a senior move.

Each franchise has special tips and tricks they use, but all of them have a main focus of providing an easy, relaxed moving experience.

Alexa Lanier“Often times, a senior move involves downsizing from a long-term home, and it can be a complicated and emotional experience,” said Alexa Lanier, a multi-unit marketing director for the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton locations. “Our customer service representatives and in-home consultants work with the customers to account for the destination of all items, which can involve multiple stops, dump runs, or storage. Our movers then take the time to make sure every item gets to where it needs to go.”

Working with seniors during the move process to ensure everything will be ok is a big deal, as downsizing and parting with belongings they’ve had for a lifetime can feel like a major loss. It can be difficult for them to let go of certain items due to memories created from these belongings, and it’s important to ease them into the next transition of their life.

“We offer a discount on all of our senior moves,” Stern said. “We also try to send our more patient crews that will take their time and move at the customer’s pace. Often times, senior citizens are less concerned with speed, and just want to understand everything in great detail.”

Check out what some of our loyal customers have had to say about our outstanding senior moving services!

“Our experience was outstanding. I needed help moving my Mom to assisted living. Ben was gracious and professional on the phone – explained all options to me and helped me set up the move within the time frame I needed. Nick called ahead to give me the heads up that they had finished their previous job and were on their way. Nick and Jose were both polite, professional, and friendly. They took good care with Mom’s belongings, and they offered their help in getting everything exactly as we wanted when we arrived at the new location. The move was done within the time (and cost) expected. Overall, an excellent job. Thank you to Nick, Jose and Ben.” – Debra, McHenry, IL

This is the third time we have used TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, they’re excellent! I would highly recommend them for anyone’s moving needs. They have moved my daughters twice, and this past move was for my mother. It was a very emotional time for her and my Pop who has dementia, the gentleman were sweet with them both. The guys came all the way to Boerne from Corpus Christi, worked two days, and it was still less than the other guys. They are good, kind, respectful, hard-working, and fast-moving men who are wonderful to work with. Do not go with the other brand, I know from experience their prices change. Thank you again for your most excellent service!” – Debbie, Corpus Christi, TX

Be sure to take some time this weekend and let your grandparents know how much they mean to you! Grandparents are a treasure to us all, and they play a major role in each of our lives! If you are a senior in need of moving services this fall, be sure to contact TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® and find out how the “Movers Who Care®” can assist with your move!

Summer months provide the best time frame for home moving

Summer

-Written by Anna Stephens

While you and your family have been enjoying the summer season, our movers at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® have been helping thousands of people move forward the last few months. There’s no doubt that summer is the busiest time of year to move, but why is that exactly? We’ve assembled a list of 10 summer moving benefits to keep in mind when it comes time to relocate your home.

  1. School year gap. Moving during the summer lets your kids get settled in their new home without having school on their minds. If you move to a new city, the summer affords the opportunity for the kids (and the adults) to make new friends before the school season begins.
  2. Sports season gap. You won’t miss out on any football, March Madness, NBA playoffs, or postseason baseball games. Plus, your kids won’t have to pause in the middle of their sports seasons, either.
  3. No snow or ice. If you live in colder climates, you have the comfort of knowing you won’t slip on ice while moving things out of the home.
  4. Garage sale season. As you’re packing, throw the items you no longer need into a garage sale pile. It’s an exciting way to start fresh and make a little money. For most areas in the country, the spring and summer months are perfect for having garage sales.
  5. Social events. Barbecues and outdoor events held in the summer months are easy ways to meet your new neighbors.
  6. Real estate market timing. Spring and summer months are the best months to list your home based on average rate of sale. Specifically, homes listed during early May and June are sold faster on average than any other months.
  7. Summer weather. You’ll need to have doors open frequently as you move belongings from your house to the truck, and light summer breezes are completely bearable compared to blustery, winter winds. Depending on where you live, temperatures are somewhat easy to predict and stable. This makes your planning process much easier.
  8. Work flexibility. Some companies offer more schedule flexibility during the summer, so taking a few days off of work to pack is less of an inconvenience.
  9. Longer days. More daylight during the summer months means you can get everything checked off your to-do list while it’s still bright outside.
  10.  Renovation time. If you are looking to renovate your new home, that’s much easier to do in the summer. Especially when those renovations are exterior or involve landscaping.
