Examining the national job landscape in 2018

With three months down in 2018, enough time has passed to gain an accurate assessment on the job market nationwide and find out what jobs are trending, declining, and what areas are most friendly for finding a new career.

The job market is always in a state of rapid change, and being able to pinpoint where to look for the best jobs, or what your next career path looks like, can be the difference between finding something you love, and finding something that makes you feel burnt out in a short period of time.

The team over at ZipRecruiter – an employment marketplace for job searches– shared their input and what their data has shown so far in 2018 to get a better understanding of the job landscape.

“Overall, it’s a great time to be looking for a job, across all industries,” said Janet Lamwatthananon, a career advisor at ZipRecruiter. “Unemployment is low, and the economy is creating jobs at an average pace of 250,000 a month. Two industries in particular that are growing are healthcare and manufacturing, which have plenty of openings and pay well.”

Where are the best job markets?

At first thought, it would seem big cities on the West and East coasts would have the most job opportunities, but so far in 2018, that’s no longer the case.

“The Midwest is hot right now,” Lamwatthananon said. “Jobs are on the upswing, which combined with a lower cost of living than on the coasts, makes the region an appealing destination for job seekers. That’s especially true for younger job seekers, who often have sizeable student loans to pay off and are looking for an affordable place to launch their careers.”

According to data by ZipRecruiter, the top 10 best job markets in 2018 include:

-Fargo, North Dakota

-Columbia, Missouri

-Oshkosh, Wisconsin

-Honolulu, Hawaii

-Ames, Iowa

-Lincoln, Nebraska

-Lewiston, Idaho

-Des Moines, Iowa

-Wausau, Wisconsin

-Minneapolis, Minnesota

ZipRecruiter based this information on a variety of factors that included the availability of jobs, industry diversity, unemployment, earnings, and community.

According to ZipRecruiter, today’s hiring landscape is a job seeker’s market. Unemployment is at an 18-year low, and in January, 200,000 new jobs were added to the marketplace. Additionally, wages grew at the fastest rate since 2008, making for an even better job seeker market.

“We aren’t seeing any declines in any fields,” Lamwatthananon said. “Right now, the economy is firing on all cylinders. It’s a great time to get out there and find a job, or if you have a job, to start looking for a new position that pays higher wages.”

The most searched job title keywords so far in 2018 include: warehouse, customer service, cashier, sales, part-time, customer service representative, healthcare, manager, administrative assistant, and electrician.

According to the data provided, warehouse employee is the hottest job of 2018. Job seekers have searched the keyword over 19 million times in just the first two months of the year, with people in this field typically working large warehouse settings that involve processing, fulfilling, and loading shipments.

With the top 10 cities mentioned in the section above, the top job categories for these cities included: physical therapy, sales, truck driving, real estate, software, construction, human resources, accounting, and nutrition.

“The top 10 most searched job industries include a wide-range of professions,” said ZipRecruiter in a press release. “Healthcare related searches took the top spot, with 77,844,317 total searchers, while the 10th most searched industry (government) had 10,804,357 searches. While retail, healthcare, and manufacturing industry searches align with top searches for title keywords and categories, other top searched industries were more surprising. Industries like science, government, and technology are typically associated with highly-educated, highly-skilled job seekers. The appearance of those industries on our list could be a clue that a wider variety of job seekers are considering switching companies or jobs than the other two lists suggest.”

March means hiring season for the “Movers Who Care®” here at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, and all across the country, we’re working our hardest to add quality team members to each level of our company.

Each March we kick off our “Career Move Month” campaign, and it’s in full-swing as we work through the month. Our goal this year is to receive 15,000 applications for all levels of the company, with 1,500 new employees hired. It’s an extensive process, but this helps us continue to grow our brand and ensure we‘re staffed with the highest quality team members to provide the highest level of service to our customers.

Whether you’re applying with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK or you’re working to get a job elsewhere, the application, hiring, and interview process can seem daunting. From filling out multiple applications to sitting through extensive and difficult interviews, it can become stressful and time consuming, and sometimes, you can feel like you’re going nowhere.

One of the best ways to tackle this issue is to be prepared and do your research prior to entering the interview process. Nailing the interviews for your desired job is usually the difference maker between getting the job and continuing the job search.

Preparation

If you aren’t prepared when you sit down to talk with the people trying to hire you, you’ll stand out like a sore thumb. Companies can tell whether you’re up-to-date on what the job entails, what you know about the company, and what your previous experience is right away. Be sure to review all details pertaining to your desired job so you can answer any question with ease.

Dress to impress

You would think this comes as a no-brainer, but sadly, it does not. Make sure you are dressed up like a pro! Showing up in your everyday street clothes sets a bad tone right away from the interview, and also shows that this job isn’t very important to you.

Follow the “15-minute early” rule

Make sure that when you know the time of your interview, you prepare accordingly, and give yourself enough time to be there a comfortable 15 minutes early. Map out how you‘re going to get there, and give yourself a cushion to account for any traffic or delays so you aren’t late for the meeting.

Shake hands like a professional

Another aspect of a job that might get overlooked, but a strong handshake can set the right tone heading into your interview. It shows that not only are you a mature candidate for the job, but establishes a level of respect and professionalism that can be appealing to the people interviewing you.

Maintain eye contact and speak clearly

Although it’s important to be knowledgeable with the relevant details while talking, none of that matters if you’re looking down at the floor and mumbling the entire time. Show your confidence by keeping your head up, maintaining appropriate eye contact, and speaking clearly and concise to show you’re the right person for the position.

Turn that cell phone off!

It’s no secret that cellphones are basically an extended part of our bodies in 2018. However, as true as that might be, don’t be on it during your interview! Be sure to either turn the phone on silent, or better yet – turn it off completely. The last thing you want is for it to go off right in the middle of your important interview.

Career Move Month

Before I began working at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®/INTERNATIONAL, Inc., I was one of the many people who thought the company only consists of movers, drivers and customer service representatives. When I first heard TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®/INTERNATIONAL, Inc. was hiring, I wasn’t interested because I knew I could not move heavy furniture. My husband then urged me to just see what types of positions they were looking for, so I did. I had heard of the company before, but I thought it was just a local business and didn’t realize, until I began looking at the positions, that it was actually something much greater.

Claire SchneiderI am now the Social Media Specialist at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®/INTERNATIONAL, Inc. and, unlike a lot of my friends, I am actually working in the field I got my college degree in and I love it! I have learned so much about this great company and feel really proud to be part of all it stands for.

Part of my job as Social Media Specialist is to work with the franchises on how to improve their social media presence. With Career Move Month approaching, there was one conversation that really stuck out to me and that was with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Troy’s Nicole Trice.

Nicole moved to Michigan last September from Nashville, Tennessee and has a communications degree from University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She is now working at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Troy as a Customer Service Representative and manages their social media. I loved how eager Nicole was to learn how she could improve their social media presence. So when I was thinking of ideas to showcase Career Move month, I decided to ask Nicole to answer some questions for me for a blog post to show how there are so many opportunities and different positions at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®.

What was the position you applied for?

I applied for the Customer Service Representative position, which is the marketing one as well.

What made you decide to apply for a position at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®?

I decided to apply at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® because the position would give me an opportunity to apply the experience that I learned from years of customer service and to gain experience associated with my Communications degree.

How are you balancing both positions?

I like to think that I am a very organized person. I make a list each day of the tasks that I want to accomplish by the end of the day. As I go through the day, I mark the items off. I start the day off as a CSR and I do the social media aspect throughout the day.

What things do you like about being a CSR? And what have you learned?

Honestly, I was a server for 5 years and being a CSR is very similar. I have learned that there is a different approach when speaking to a customer over the phone compared to in person. I like that I don’t have to serve food to people!

What do you like about being in charge of social media? And what have you learned?

I like getting to expand our reach to people. I can let people see that we are real people that care about how we move the customer. I like that I get to see other people’s ideas and I learn something new every day. I have learned how important a Facebook and Twitter are to the business world today. I am learning how to manage websites, blogs and all aspects of social media.

 What are some challenges you have been faced with having both positions?

It does get tough balancing both positions. I do wish I had a little bit more time to focus on conquering the social media aspect.

 Is there anything else that you think people would like to know about how it is to work at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®?

We get to help one of the most stressful moments in a person’s life!

There are so many positions like mine and Nicole’s at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® and now with Career Move Month, we are looking to accomplish our goal of 10,000 applications during the month of April.
