Moving yourself vs. hiring professionals: The differences between the two and how each cost is different

TMAT211

Often times when we get asked about moving, the first question is always the same: How much does it cost?

Cost is usually the deciding factor in how people go about home moving, whether they’re planning to hire a professional moving company like TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, or try and complete the move themselves. The common misconception thrown around in the world of home moving is that doing it yourself is a “cheaper” option than hiring professionals. On the surface, this might seem like the case, but once it is broken down, you’ll see moving on your own can add up price-wise.

Below, we’ve broken down some of the costs and factors you should consider when moving yourself vs. hiring professional movers.

Time

While not technically a cost, time is still important and valuable, and moving yourself takes a lot of your own personal time. You’ll still be responsible for packing up all of your belongings into boxes, loading them into a rental truck, and unloading  at your new house

If you’re doing this alone or with friends who aren’t professionally trained, it will more than likely take a few trips. Multiple trips can generally lead to multiple days of moving as opposed to just one, and this is more time spent on gas, renting the truck, and the miscellaneous costs of keeping you and your friends happy, hydrated, and fed.

Moving equipment

If you’re planning on moving yourself, what equipment will you use? It’s not a smart idea to try loading it into a pickup truck. For a full home move, you’re going to need a moving truck, which means renting a truck from a rental company. The costs of renting also includes the gas for the truck, which isn’t cheap.

You’ll also need to get your hands on equipment like moving straps, dollies, ropes, stretch wrap, and furniture pads, or packing supplies and moving boxes so your belongings stay safe.

The potential for damage and injury

Moving isn’t as easy as it looks, and there’s a reason moving companies are considered “professionals”. Trying to move heavy items on your own puts you at risk for injury if you aren’t properly trained on moving techniques.

This can also lead to added stress during the move, which creates a miserable experience for everyone.

Finding “help”

The old “find a friend with a truck” has been around forever when it comes to moving, but in all seriousness, you’re going to need help if you plan on handling a move yourself.

Recruiting friends can be tough, but you’ll also need to compensate them for their time – whether that’s just paying them straight up, or offering them food for their troubles. Either way, this is more cost on your end.

Why you should consider hiring movers

When you factor in everything above – the money you’ll spend on trucks and equipment, the potential for damages due to not being professionally trained, or the long-term health effects of trying to move yourself – you’ll realize you’re not saving as much as you might think.

Hiring a professional moving company like TWO MEN AND A TRUCK ensures all of the instances listed above are taken care of while you sit back and focus on more important things. The saying “you get what you pay for” has never been more true than with our company, and you’re getting a full-service, professional experience when you use our teams.

Do your homework to avoid falling victim to moving scams

TMATAUGUST029

May is National Moving Month, and usually for us here at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, we are full steam ahead working to help our customers move to the next chapters in their lives.

Although things are different in the world right now with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we understand there are still people who need to move, and we are doing our serving that need in the safest way possible. Unfortunately, there are still plenty of “scam” moving operations out there in the world looking to make a quick buck off people by posing as a reputable mover. They will often advertise low-priced moving services and it may seem like a great deal, however, you may sacrifice well-trained, background-checked, and hard-working professionals for that low price.

There are a number of ways to do your research into reputable companies, and one of these ways is through reading customer reviews online.

“The number of Google reviews a brand has makes a significant impact on the customer’s decision-making process, but what most customers don’t know is that some moving companies pay or falsify their online reviews, which is against Google policy,” said Jon Nobis, the CEO of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK. “This lack of authenticity in online reviews makes the process of hiring a trustworthy, reliable mover even more difficult for consumers.”

Using online reviews will help you gauge the legitimacy of the moving operating you’re about to hire, and you can pick up on trends – both good and bad – on how the company operates.

Along with customer reviews, extensive online research can help you look for things like how they treat their employees, how professional they are, if they offer professional moving equipment, and more. All of this is important when it comes to making sure your money is going somewhere safe and not to a scam.

“As a brand, we are laser-focused on transparency and building trust, ensuring that our customer experience is world class,” said Nobis. “Because moving scams are on the rise, we’ve taken these measures up a notch and are committed to further developing our customer service initiatives with the launch of new technology-focused solutions that make booking a move easier for our customers.”

Lastly, another area where you can decipher scams from legitimate operations is with online quote forms. Shady advertisements and data aggregators can often give the impression of being real online, but they’re just looking to sell your customer info to other companies. This is why it’s important to get your moving quotes directly from the moving company.

“It’s important to make sure that you are requesting an online moving quote directly from a moving company that you are intending to work with,” Nobis said. “It can become very frustrating for a customer who believes they are submitting a moving request for a specific company and then three or four moving companies follow up with phone calls and emails. Customers need to be careful during their research phase to ensure they’re only providing their personal information to companies they’re interested in moving with.”

To learn more about how to avoid moving scams, please watch the video below from TWO MEN AND A TRUCK CEO Jon Nobis.

The differences of moving yourself vs. hiring professionals

TMAT451

One of the biggest decisions you have to make when it’s time to move is whether you’ll do it on your own or hire professional movers.

There is a general misconception around hiring professional movers, you might think it’s expensive and not worth the cost. So instead, many people go about a move on their own and with help from friends and family. It may sound easy, but if you break it down, it’s a little more complicated than that.

Here are a few things you should think about as you’re determining whether to hire professionals or complete the move on your own.

The actual equipment needed to move

If moving yourself, you’ll need to rent a moving truck if you’re moving a full home. On top of that, you’re also going to need to put money into the following items:

-Gas for the moving truck – and, depending on far the move is – multiple fill-ups

-Moving equipment to move all of your heavier items, such as moving straps, ropes, stretch wrap, moving dollies, and furniture pads.

-Packing boxes and supplies to keep your belongings safe

Being sure to have the proper supplies, along with packing away your belongings, avoids any unnecessary damages that may occur in the process.

The time involved with moving yourself

Time doesn’t necessarily equate to a “cost”, but it is valuable, and if you find yourself trying to take on a move by yourself, it may take more time than you’d prefer.

Prior to moving day, you’ll spend time finding boxes and packing supplies before you pack everything away. You’ll also need to organize what is going to the new house and what is getting thrown away. Lastly, depending on what type of vehicle you rent for moving – you might be making multiple trips from your old home to your new one.

Finding moving help

We’ve all heard the joke about asking your friend with a truck to help you move, but if you’re planning on moving a home yourself, you’ll need some help.

Recruiting friends to help move is difficult enough as is, but you’ll also need to pay them in either cash, or food and drinks to keep them happy during the moving process.

The potential for damage and injury

Moving isn’t as easy as it looks, and there’s a reason that moving companies are considered “professionals”. Trying to move heavy items on your own puts you at risk for injury if you aren’t properly trained on moving techniques.

This can also lead to added stress during the move, which creates a miserable experience for everyone.

Why should I hire professional movers?

Considering everything mentioned above, you start to realize doing the move on your own might not be as cheap (or easy!) as it might have seemed.

The true cost of moving yourself vs. hiring professional movers

TMAT233

-Written by Erik Sargent

When it comes to home moving, there’s one question that people always tend to ask when deciding between hiring professional moving services and doing it themselves – how much does it cost?

The general misconception with hiring a professional moving company is that it simply costs too much relative to just doing the work yourself, and people will rent a moving truck, grab a couple of friends, and think that all that stands in the way of their home move is a day of hard work. But, have you ever thought of what goes into the cost of moving yourself? It’s not that simple.

If there’s one thing we can tell you for certain, it’s that moving is complex, and there is quite a bit that goes into completing a move yourself.

The actual moving equipment

First and foremost, you’re going to need to rent a moving truck, and will need to get one that is going to be able to handle all of your belongings. However, it’s not as simple as throwing everything onto the truck and transporting it.

You’re going to need to purchase or rent at least some of the following on your own:

-Fuel for the moving truck – potentially multiple times

-Moving equipment that might include: straps, ropes, stretch wrap, moving dollies, furniture pads

-Packing boxes and packing supplies

A whole bunch of time

While this might not necessarily qualify as a “cost”, the time you spend completing a move yourself will add up at some point.

Before you even complete the move, you’re going to need to spend a day or two packing up all of your belongings and trying to figure out how to organize your items. Come moving day, there could be multiple trips involved from your old home to your new home as you transport your belongings.

Damages, stress, and potential injury

There’s a good chance that if you aren’t a professional mover yourself,  trying to move your own belongings will likely result in the damage of some of your items, which can become pricey as you try to repair them down the road. This also means that you might not be trained on the proper moving techniques, which can easily result in injury and future trips to the doctor.

This provides even more stress in the moving process, and creates a miserable experience.

Finding friends and paying them

We know the old joke about finding a friend with a truck to help you move, but when it comes to moving, you don’t want to do it alone. You’re going to need recruit a couple of friends to help you move, which means buying food and drinks to keep them happy all day long while they help you move your home.

What’s it like to be a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® mover?

DSC_0323

-Written by Erik Sargent

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK teams are fully submerged into the busy moving season all around the country and internationally, as our professional moving teams are working harder than ever to move people to their next steps in life.

Being a home mover is an incredibly taxing profession, and at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, we strive to hire the best team members to enter our customers’ homes and move their most prized possessions. It’s a rewarding experience for our moving teams as they establish relationships with customers and truly lend them a helping hand with one of life’s most stressful events.

We spoke with team members from our Pasadena, Cali., location to find out just what goes into a day in the life as a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK mover or driver.

Here’s what they had to say!

DSC_0378How does a typical day start as a mover/driver?

“Usually, we just prep our trucks and make sure we have the right equipment for the upcoming move. We call the customer ahead of time and ask them if there is anything they need like boxes, or if they have changed their mind on something last second so we can adjust and bring the proper equipment.”
Jose Morales

How long does it take to get ready?

“It varies, depending on whether the truck needs something special like boxes, or if the truck needs to be swept out. It all varies, but it’s usually between 15 and 20 minutes, 30 minutes at the most to get ready to go.” – Abraham Baustista

How long does a typical day for a mover/driver last?

“It all varies on a lot of different things. Usually for us, the average is anywhere from six to 12 hours on a normal day. What changes it up is anything from someone having only a little bit of items to longer walks, apartment moves and condo moves, and parking difficulties, which all affect the time.” – Jose Morales

Favorite parts of your job?

“I would have to say the people that work here. I do have a lot of experience working at different places, and I can say that from day one when I started here, I was a little nervous because I didn’t know anyone. But the thing about this company is they do a very good job of just getting you used to the environment, the people, and literally by my fourth or fifth day, I knew everyone. That’s just my favorite thing – the comradery in the DSC_0388office is what keeps us going.” – Jabrion Burnside

Challenges on the job?

“Definitely the heat. Lifting is not easy, and you’re already producing a lot of heat as is. When you add in the sun on you and how hot the truck can get, it sometimes just wears on you and can slow you down. Also, since we are in California and specifically the Los Angeles area, traffic can get really, really bad.” – Abraham Bautista

What do you do to make customers feel comfortable during a home move?

“I would say the biggest thing is getting to know the customer. At the end of the day, you have a service you are performing for them, but nothing is better than actually knowing you on a more personal level, because then they trust you more and you trust them more, and it adds to the overall experience of the move.” – Jabrion Burnside

There you have it! Moving is one of the tougher jobs you’ll find, but when you have hardworking professionals like these three young men – and the team members at all 350  TWO MEN AND A TRUCK locations – it can make your moving process a little bit easier.

Ohio operations manager steps up for customer during move

TMAT470.jpg

-Written by Erik Sargent

What defines a “Move Hero” in the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® world can be described several different ways, but at the end of the day, the simplest definition is someone who goes above and beyond to make a difference for our customers.

This can be something small or big, but regardless of what the action is, it’s moments or actions from our outstanding team members that stand out and show that we truly are the “Movers Who Care®”. For Cameron Gaines – an operations manager for a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK location in Ohio – his actions during a recent move earned him the reputation of a “Move Hero” when he took it upon himself to provide personal protection for a customer.

“Our customer was going through a domestic abuse situation with her boyfriend, leading her to want out of the house,” said Gregg Higgins, the franchise manager. “You could tell that over the phone, she was scared to even book a move with us. On the day of her move she was visibly scared, so Cam stepped up and made sure she was safe and protected while the guys conducted the move.”

It was a simple but meaningful action from Gaines to provide this protection for the customer, and it was clear to everyone involved on the move that his actions helped bring peace-of-mind to the woman while she went through this extremely difficult process.

Gaines chose to do this on his own and without the request of anyone involved at the franchise, and typically keeps in touch with the customer service representatives at his locations to determine the type of moves they are about to experience so he can provide assistance.

“I was not asked to do this, but I have a great relationship with our CSR team, and they keep me in the loop on potentially sensitive moves at my request,” Gaines said. “It can turn into a sticky situation at any time, and I don’t want my team or the customer to be at risk, so that extra guy on the job to help keep an eye out while the team moves never hurts.”

Gaines kept it simple but effective while providing his protection to the customer throughout the move, sticking by her side, offering assistance as she moved and packed her belongings safely.

It’s a testament to the type of workers we hire at all of our TWO MEN AND A TRUCK locations across the country, and it shows how we have earned the reputation we have as a brand.

“It means everything to us as an organization,” said Clayton Huston, the business, development, and recruiting coordinator at multiple franchise locations in Ohio and Kentucky. “If we are putting our people first, our team will also put the same care and compassion into the customers. Compassion and empathy are vital for a healthy team, and not only do these character traits build internal relationships, but they establish new and meaningful customer relationships.  Cam takes his role and responsibilities as an operations manager seriously, and his actions and decisions support his conviction.”

For Gaines, this was just another day on the job, but his actions prompted the customer to reach out and leave a touching review, thanking him and the rest of the steam for helping her out.

“My situation was a bit precarious,” the customer said in a written review. “The men of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK did so beautifully, I felt like my friends were helping me, and I had never met these men before. They brought an extra man [to] help me feel safe while they loaded the truck. The transition to the new location went smoothly, and I would recommend TWO MEN AND A TRUCK to anyone. Thanks for everything, guys.”

Gaines was glad to be of assistance, kept calm throughout the move, and tried his best to make sure the customer was happy.

“I was pretty calm throughout the ordeal, and the crew planned on me being there for extra support,” Gaines said. “[This showed] that we really are the ‘Movers Who Care’, and continue to show this by giving great customer service day in and day out. After the move, the customer hugged me and told me that she really appreciated what we did for her and her son.”
