TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® works to make life easier for veterans

As we enter the month of November, all around the country, we come together and celebrate the heroic acts and sacrifices of the men and women who have bravely served in our armed forces.

Freedom isn’t free, and it’s important to take the time to recognize what each and every one of these individuals has done to give us the life we all live today. At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, these sacrifices are not lost on us, and we work our hardest to make sure we give back as much as possible to our veterans all over the United States.

Each fall around the time of Veteran’s Day, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchises run our Movers for Military campaign, where the franchises partner with local schools, businesses, and veteran’s shelters in their community to collect essential care items that can be donated to veterans in need.

These donations go a long way in helping our veterans maintain a good quality of life, and can often help them get back on their feet after hard times.

“We feel this is a good fit because we employ so many veterans at each of our locations,” said Charlene Bush, marketing manager for four TWO MEN AND A TRUCK locations in Southeast, Mich. “Some of our longest tenured movers and drivers are veterans, and we wanted to be able to give back and show our appreciation for their service.”

Hiring veterans

Along with the Movers for Military campaign, another way TWO MEN AND A TRUCK works to give back to veterans is by hiring them in a variety of roles.

From drivers all the way up through franchisees – and even at our Home Office location – we employ veterans for many different positions in our company, and they make up a big portion of who we are as a company.

The team environment allows for a seamless transition from military life, and as Pasadena, Cali., Move Manager Cody Setser pointed out, these similar works styles are easy to adjust to.

“The main similarities are honestly just staying motivated and being disciplined,” Setser said. “When you’re supposed to show up, show up, because people are counting on you and it can screw up everyone’s day. Just be fair – you can still have fun while being disciplined at the same time, and that’s an important thing.”

Setser joined TWO MEN AND A TRUCK after serving six years in the Marine Corps Infantry, and immediately joined the company after his time in the service.

One of the biggest reasons he’d recommended the company to someone is due to the team-environment that TWO MEN AND A TRUCK instills at each franchise location.

“It’s a solid group of guys, and it has the same basic comradery that you can get with the Marine Corps,” Setser said. “You’re doing tough work, but at the same time, you can still have fun with it and there are a lot of similarities. It’s a great group of people to work with.”

For Jerry Swartz, team lead at the Central Illinois, Ill., franchise who also served seven years in the Army, he noted the chain of command as a major similarity from military life to TWO MEN AND A TRUCK life.

“The biggest similarity is the chain of command,” Swartz said. “That’s always important, otherwise you just have people walking into offices and it’s very chaotic. Then, just that daily discipline of showing up every day and being dependable.”

We’re thankful for all of the veterans in our company and for the hard work they do every day to help us continue Moving People Forward! To find out more about if our career opportunities fit your veteran background, visit our careers page here.

March means hiring season for the “Movers Who Care®” here at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, and all across the country, we’re working our hardest to add quality team members to each level of our company.

Each March we kick off our “Career Move Month” campaign, and it’s in full-swing as we work through the month. Our goal this year is to receive 15,000 applications for all levels of the company, with 1,500 new employees hired. It’s an extensive process, but this helps us continue to grow our brand and ensure we‘re staffed with the highest quality team members to provide the highest level of service to our customers.

Whether you’re applying with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK or you’re working to get a job elsewhere, the application, hiring, and interview process can seem daunting. From filling out multiple applications to sitting through extensive and difficult interviews, it can become stressful and time consuming, and sometimes, you can feel like you’re going nowhere.

One of the best ways to tackle this issue is to be prepared and do your research prior to entering the interview process. Nailing the interviews for your desired job is usually the difference maker between getting the job and continuing the job search.

Fortunately, our quality training and hiring teams here at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK have seen it all when it comes to the hiring process, and we’ve put together an excellent list of interview tips to make sure you nail your next job interview and land your dream job.

Be sure to give these a try!

Preparation

If you aren’t prepared when you sit down to talk with the people trying to hire you, you’ll stand out like a sore thumb. Companies can tell whether you’re up-to-date on what the job entails, what you know about the company, and what your previous experience is right away. Be sure to review all details pertaining to your desired job so you can answer any question with ease.

Dress to impress

You would think this comes as a no-brainer, but sadly, it does not. Make sure you are dressed up like a pro! Showing up in your everyday street clothes sets a bad tone right away from the interview, and also shows that this job isn’t very important to you.

Follow the “15-minute early” rule

Make sure that when you know the time of your interview, you prepare accordingly, and give yourself enough time to be there a comfortable 15 minutes early. Map out how you‘re going to get there, and give yourself a cushion to account for any traffic or delays so you aren’t late for the meeting.

Shake hands like a professional

Another aspect of a job that might get overlooked, but a strong handshake can set the right tone heading into your interview. It shows that not only are you a mature candidate for the job, but establishes a level of respect and professionalism that can be appealing to the people interviewing you.

Maintain eye contact and speak clearly

Although it’s important to be knowledgeable with the relevant details while talking, none of that matters if you’re looking down at the floor and mumbling the entire time. Show your confidence by keeping your head up, maintaining appropriate eye contact, and speaking clearly and concise to show you’re the right person for the position.

Turn that cell phone off!

It’s no secret that cellphones are basically an extended part of our bodies in 2018. However, as true as that might be, don’t be on it during your interview! Be sure to either turn the phone on silent, or better yet – turn it off completely. The last thing you want is for it to go off right in the middle of your important interview.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK’s busy season occurs from May through September, and it’s important for each of our franchises to be fully-equipped with properly trained staff to provide top-notch moving services to our customers across the nation.

Johanna-Weitzel“Career Move Month is our annual national recruiting initiative to help our franchises staff up for the busy season,” said Johanna Weitzel, recruiting and retention manager at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Home Office. “This year, our goal is to receive 15,000 applications and make 1,500 hires during the month of March.”

The hiring initiative ensures our brand is on the right track, having properly trained team members with strong work ethics which puts us in the right position to succeed and give our loyal customers the most positive and successful move experience possible.

“We organize several programs to showcase our TWO MEN AND A TRUCK core values, culture, and what it’s like to work here,” Weitzel said. “Our franchises get involved at a local level, and are usually thrilled to build upon the national programs we put in place and extend their efforts through the rest of the year.”

“My favorite thing about working at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK is the overall atmosphere, sense of accomplishment, and change in environment,” said Matt Wasalaski, a mover at our Brighton, Mich., franchise. “I enjoy the customers I work for, the employees I work with, and after a hard day’s work, I can always hold my head high knowing me and my crew helped someone during a stressful situation in their lives. In one word, I would describe this job as ‘rewarding’.”

Many of our frontline employees echo the same sentiment as Wasalaski – the team experience and the ability to make a difference in people’s lives is what motivates them to come work for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK each and every day.

“My favorite thing about working for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK is helping customers move forward in their lives and seeing the joy on their faces when we do,” said Robert Cruze, lead trainer at the Brownstown, Mich., franchise. “The job is awesome, and everyone is very friendly. It is like a family at the franchise!”

From mover to marketer in a matter of months

Written by Jessy Howe

Moving People Forward® is our core purpose. We make it a priority each and every day to move people forward, both personally and professionally. So much so, that 75 percent of our managers started in frontline positions before moving into management roles!TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Dirk Knowles

Like many employees within our system, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Fort Wayne, Ind., Marketing Coordinator Dirk Knowles has experienced this firsthand.

After attending high school in Bluffton, Ind., Knowles went on to attend the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne to pursue his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in marketing.

Although Knowles had known about TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® since 2008, it wasn’t until August 2012 that he joined the company as a mover. Two months later, he was offered a position in the office as a customer service representative (CSR). TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Franchisee Matt Schiffeneder took notice of Knowles’ potential and knew of his knowledge in marketing. After two months of working as a CSR, Schiffeneder presented him the opportunity to further advance his career and take on the role of marketing coordinator at the franchise. Knowles jumped at the opportunity.

“TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® has not only given me the opportunity to come up through the ranks but has also given me the chance I have been looking for to do what I love and that is bring awareness and build the reputation for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® here in Fort Wayne, as well as work with the community through our charity programs,” said Knowles.

This coming spring, Knowles will have the chance to do just that as he coordinates the Movers for Moms® campaign in his community. The program is held at all TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® locations across the country to collect donations for essential care items to be delivered to women’s and family shelters on Mother’s Day. He and his team have already gained the support of six Fort Wayne businesses who will be donation partners throughout the program.

As he plans for this large campaign and tackles day-to-day duties, Knowles feels supported by the corporate office and resources available to him.

“My favorite part about the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system is how open the line of communication between home office and the franchise is,” said Knowles. “Being very new to the position and being my first opportunity to focus on the marketing aspect of a company, it is reassuring to know that when I have a question I can contact home office directly and speak with someone who has the experience and knowledge.”

While he continues to excel and grow within the company, Knowles encourages others considering beginning careers with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® to take the leap.

“Having experience as a mover significantly helped me when working as a CSR when explaining to customers how and what our movers would do. Now having worked as both a mover and CSR, it helps when explaining the moving process starting with that first initial customer call to the signing of the paperwork at the end of the move,” said Knowles. “My advice for anyone thinking about starting a career with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® would be to take every opportunity you are given and to work in different positions within the company.”

Interviewing for a job can be a nerve-wracking experience. No matter how many times you practice your pitch, talking about yourself for an extended period of time can be uncomfortable. At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®our core purpose is to move people forward, including helping you land your dream job!

To officially kick off Career Move Month, here is a list of interview tips to make you stand out from the other candidates.

Make eye contact. Making eye contact with your interviewer is a great way to show off your confidence (even if you’re shaking in your boots). Eye contact is polite and very sincere when you’re talking with someone. In addition to making eye contact, make sure you smile! J We’re happy to see you’re enjoying yourself, and love to see your personable demeanor, too.

Have a firm handshake. No one likes to shake a limp hand. Male or female, it’s important to show off a professional, firm handshake to your interviewer. If you’re uncomfortable, practice by shaking family members’ and friends’ hands to get the grip just right without shaking their hands too hard. Two Men and a Truck

Research the company. Know the company you are interviewing with. More times than not, your interviewer will ask you questions about the company and knowing recent or upcoming events, and general information will get you a long way. It shows you are genuinely interested and invested in the company and position.

Show up early. Arrive 10-15 minutes early to your interview. There is a fine line when it comes to punctuality. You don’t want to arrive too early, and you definitely don’t want to be late — your interviewer’s time is valuable. If you’re not sure how long it will take you to get to your interview, we recommend driving there the day before to have a better idea how long it will take you to get there.

Silence your phone. Always silence your phone or better yet, turn it off. You don’t want to receive a phone call during your interview. Turning off your phone is a respectable solution and you won’t have to worry about a text, email, phone call, or alert going off.

Dress professionally. Have you heard the saying dress to impress? That cliché has special meaning when referring to job interviews. No matter how casual the dress code is, always look and dress your best. Also, get plenty of rest the night before. Yes, we can tell when you’re exhausted or just enjoyed a late-night party!CMM2014_FBCover

Eight interns and a truck – Part 3

Written by Cheyenne Yost

Mark List – Human Resources

MarkMark List is one of two human resource interns here at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®/International, Inc. I call Mark a veteran intern because he knows the ins and outs of Home Office, and it is his second summer interning here. When I met Mark on my first day, I didn’t even realize he was an intern, he was very helpful and organized; I assumed he was a long-term employee! After interviewing Mark, here’s what he had to say about his second summer as an HR intern.

Q: Tell me a little bit about yourself and your background.

Mark: I was born and raised here in Lansing. My father is a civil engineer for Golder Associates, an international firm, and my mother works here at Home Office as the IT service operations manager. I have one older sister who is an electrical engineer at Dematic in Grand Rapids, Mich. I attend Grand Valley State University where I am majoring in business with a human resources emphasis and considering using it as a pre-law degree. I also run cross country/track and field for Grand Valley.

Q: What made you decide to intern at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® for a second summer?

Mark: This company has directly influenced my life. My mother has worked here since I was eight years old, and I am so thankful for that. After I interned here last summer, I was really just excited for the brand and telling people how I worked here. Once I got back to campus and started my classes, I saw the bigger picture with everything this company had taught me. I learned so much here last year that I wanted to return because of the practical knowledge I gained at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®.

Q: What are your day-to-day tasks here at the office?

Mark: I monitor scores and information through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration about our franchises and their safety on the roads. I bounce back and forth between here and the Lansing franchise to help with monthly meetings and spot checks. I also assist with the internal risk management newsletter and gather that information. I get to see a little bit of everything, and I’m very lucky to always be on the move!

Q: What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned while interning here?

Mark: The most valuable thing I’ve learned is to always ask questions if you don’t understand or are unsure of something. The people at this company have always been so helpful. Last year I had so many questions as I tried to figure out who handled what and inevitably had to go outside of my department to find the answers. No matter who I asked, they were always patient and very helpful toward me. The Home Office employees are amazing like that!

Q: Has the internship taught you anything about your field of study?

Mark: Risk management is “in” if you will. The priority for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is to keep its employee’s safe while exceeding our customers’ expectations. This means always updating policies and finding new technology that helps keep us safe in the office and out on the roads.

Q: Do you have any advice for the other interns?

Mark: Absolutely! I have two things: First, get to know everyone you possibly can here, and at the Lansing franchise. I asked for help so much last year and everyone supported in any way they could. Second, take this whole experience in. This is an international company and interning here means something, so continue to grow.

Q: What are your plans after graduation?

Mark: I’m hoping to stay on here in the risk management department if the opportunity arises. If not that, I am considering going to law school and specializing in employment and labor law.

Q: Okay, final question. If you were stranded on an island and could only bring 3 items, what would you choose and why?

Mark: Alright the three things I would bring are:

  1. A Bible. I’d bring this because my parents raised me in the church and it always has the answer.
  2. A hammock. Reading my Bible in a hammock in the shade …yes please.
  3. A fishing pole. Going fishing in my spare time would be pretty great. Not a bad life to live!
  4. A best friend named Wilson (who happens to be a volleyball). Simply because without anyone to talk to, I’d feel like a castaway.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®: Hiring quality employees

Written by Claire Schneider

the_shunks_-_fd_site_imageFinding top people with the right attitude is a daily battle for any business owner. Our Career Move Month helps to alleviate this stress and by recruiting talented folks who embody the caring and can-do attitude required to be a part of a big business. Dan and Rene Shunk, franchisees of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Bloomington and Central Ill., know the struggles of finding quality employees. They strive to help their employees not only succeed in their roles but also to grow with the business. See how they move people forward in the following interview:

Q: What are your and Dan’s business backgrounds?

Rene: I have a B. S. in Engineering from the University of Illinois. I worked for over 10 years in research and business development within the agriculture industry. My specialty was research project management and development focused on multi-partner, multi-year research programs with an emphasis on commercialization of new technology.

Dan has a B.S. degree in Engineering from the University of Illinois and a MBA from Washington University. He worked for over 10 years in the heavy equipment industry in sales and branch management. His focus was on selling a high quality product and then servicing that product with excellent customer service.

Q: How long have the two of you been with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®?

Rene: We both started with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® in 2008 and haven’t looked back.

Q: What has been your experience with hiring quality employees?

Rene: Hiring quality employees is the biggest challenge in a small business. Anyone first starting out is an unknown in terms of what type of employer they will be. Add to that the inherent difficulty of finding qualified applicants for each open position.

Q: In your eyes, what makes a good team member?

Rene: People usually answer this question with “attitude” and that is the simplest and most honest answer. Work ethic is really significant along with a willingness to work closely with others to see the company succeed. People must be motivated by helping our customers to really enjoy this type of work.

Q: Have you recently promoted someone from within the system? If so, why?

Rene: Yes, we have recently promoted several drivers into both team leader roles and assistant manager positions. They are learning new skills, are helping the business expand, and are providing leadership to new hires. We’re really excited to be able to offer more opportunities for these loyal employees to grow in their careers.

Q: How do you feel TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® allows you to promote from within?

Rene: In the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® culture there is no downside to having customer-facing experience. Each of these team members are viewed as a valuable part of the system, and cultivating a happy team is vital to our success. There are many resources available to encourage promotion including training programs and mentors who have taken those same paths from their start on the front line.

Why do you feel Career Move Month is so important to your business?

Rene: Career Move Month allows us to spotlight the many ways a person could have a terrific career with us, and the initiative allows our potential employees to see the full spectrum of opportunities beyond just viewing us as a small company at the local level. It has enhanced our recruiting efforts, generating more attention to positions which are available at our franchise.

Q: How would you describe the culture at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®?

Rene: Our personal mission has always been to provide not only a great service to our customers but to provide a great place for our employees to work. We chose to join the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system because of a culture which values our customers, employees, and community.
