TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® moving tips for military members

TMAT189

At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, we are all about giving back to our community and helping to move people forward in life. This is especially true with our veterans, and we make sure to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for this county and allow us to do we what we do each day.

This is especially true when it comes to providing moving services for active military members, and we try to deliver the absolute best moving services possible for those about to serve, currently serving, or those who may be finishing up their time in the military. While many of the basic aspects of the moving process translate to a military move, there are some minor details that must be taken into consideration to ensure the move goes smoothly.

Thankfully, the “Movers Who Care®” at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK have put together some important moving tips for military members so when it comes time to make your next step, you have all the resources and planning taken care of.

Pack with efficiency

Packing can sometimes be the difference between a successful move and a disaster, and taking the time to pack properly will take a ton of stress off your shoulders and keep the entire process moving along as you relocate to your new home.

Start by labeling all of your boxes so there is no confusion as to where any of your belongings are. Try to organize boxes by keeping items of the highest importance together so that when you get to your new spot, you are able to access them quickly. Be sure to check with the military base you are moving to on their restrictions or guidelines of what is and isn’t allowed on the premises so you aren’t forced to part with something unexpectedly.

Stay organized

For many active military members, moving can become an all too frequent process, and you can find yourself jumping from city to city based on your assignments.

This creates an even greater significance on staying organized with your belongings, as you’ll want to keep yourself on track and not get lost in clutter from place to place. Determine what items are useful at your next place and what items are no longer needed, and toss the unwanted stuff.

Pay attention to pricing options

When it comes to moving as a member of the military, you are given the option of buying or renting your own place, but the pricing options can vary.

Your housing is paid for to an extent, but what allowance you receive depends if you live on or off the base. If you decide to live on the base, they will usually take your entire allowance and allow you to live there without requiring payment for rent or bills If you choose to live off-base, anything you pay for that goes over your allowance comes out of pocket.

Find out what type of housing option works best for you financially, and make the necessary arrangements.

Give yourself extra time

In order for movers to get on a military base, their moving trucks are going to be thoroughly examined by security, and this will often add in extra time. It’s important to plan with this in mind, especially when being charge by the hour for your moving services.

Talk with your moving company and find out what their rates are to ensure there are no surprises come moving time.

Be prepared if you’re going international

This goes without saying, but if your military move involves relocating to a new country, there’s quite a bit of extra planning that wouldn’t normally come with a local home move.

Some things to keep in mind as you relocate to a new country:

-Longer time frames for delivering and receiving your items

-Language barriers

-Relocating your vehicle

Along with this, there are plenty of other factors that come into play, so it’s important to be up-to-date with the regulations of your new country, and with your new military base.

At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, we put a heavy emphasis on helping and giving back to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to this country. From our Movers for Military campaign in the fall to employing numerous veterans, we feel it’s our duty to make sure these brave men and women are taken care of.

If you’re looking to complete an upcoming military move, give us a call! We’d love to help get you on your way and show you why we are known as the “Movers Who Care®”.

Nine questions to ask your landlord before moving in

TMAT113.jpg

This is a guest post from Avail.com

There’s a lot on your mind when you’re preparing for a move, from what day you can move in to when you’ll receive your keys, where the moving truck can park, and more.

To ensure you’re as prepared as possible, and have as many moving day details to make it a stress-free and efficient day, it’s important to ask your landlord these nine questions ahead of time.

#1 What day can I move in?

It’s best to check with your landlord about what day you’re able to move in. That way, you are both on the same page and you can schedule professional movers ahead of time. It’s recommended to reach out and book your movers as soon as possible, even as early as one month out from the date you’d like to move.

#2 What will you do to prepare the unit before I move in?

Most landlords clean and re-paint in between tenants. We recommend finding out what your landlord plans on doing ahead of time, so you know what condition the place will be in when you move in.

#3 Were the locks changed?

In some locations, it’s a legal requirement for landlords to change the locks in between tenants. Even if it’s not a legal requirement, you can still request that your landlord changes the locks if you prefer.

#4 When will I get my keys?

Of course, you’ll need to know when you can pick up your keys to access your unit for move-in day! We recommend coordinating with your landlord to find out where and when you can pick up your keys. You may want to ask if there are other people who have a copy of the key, or access to your unit.

#5 What doors/elevators should I use? And where can I park my moving truck?

Your landlord will know the best place for your moving truck to be, whether it’s in an alley, on the street, or in a truck dock (at a larger building). You can also find out if there are service elevators for you to use. Be sure to make arrangements for parking and service elevators prior to your movers’ arrival.

#6 What do I do in the case of a lockout?

Before moving in, it’s best to know the lockout procedure. Is there an extra key on site in a lockbox? Is there a 24/7 emergency lockout company you should call? Your landlord will likely have a way for you to remedy the situation, and having this information may come in handy down the road.

#7 Is there a move-in checklist for me to complete?

It’s best practice to fill out a move-in checklist. You’ll mark any existing damage on move-in day. That way, when you move out, you can show the landlord that the damage was already there. This is helpful if you want to receive your full security deposit at the end of the lease.

You can also check to ensure you have all the proper moving essentials, here.

#8 How do I pay first month’s rent?

Typically, landlords expect first month’s rent before you move in. It’s usually a requirement before he or she will hand over a key to you. Make sure you know how to pay rent and when it’s due so you get your keys on time.

#9 What utilities am I responsible for?

You’ll want to set up your utilities before you move in. Gas, electricity, and internet are utilities you’ll want immediately. If you’re responsible for setting these up, your landlord should let you know which companies to reach out to. If not, we recommend asking your landlord for more information.

Next steps

You’ve asked your landlord these questions, and found out your move-in date, so the next step is setting up professional movers. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is here to help.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® safety tips to ensure a fun and safe Halloween night

Halloween-SG-2016-4

The month of October is coming to a close, and that means one thing – Halloween is near! Everyone’s favorite, spooky fall holiday is just around the corner, and all across the country people of all ages celebrate with fun costumes, delicious candy, and scary movies.

Much thought is spent each year on picking that perfect costume, deciding which haunted house you are going to, or where you are going to trick-or-treat, but one aspect that often gets overlooked is Halloween safety. With so many people out and about in the streets – often not paying attention due to all of the excitement – the risk for kids being involved in an accident increases substantially.

According to CouponChief.com, The likelihood of your child being struck by a car or killed in a car pedestrian collision quadruples on Halloween. Death and injuries by fire also jump from October 30 to November 1.

Other Halloween night stats from CouponChief include:

-23 percent of child-pedestrian accidents occurred from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 60 percent of child-pedestrian accidents occurred from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

-In over 70 percent of the accidents, the child was not crossing at an intersection or crosswalk.

-32 percent of all child fatalities occurred with children ages 12-15, followed by 23 percent of fatalities with children 5-8.

-Drivers aged 15-25 accounted for nearly one-third of all fatal accidents involving child pedestrians on Halloween.

These are pretty alarming statistics, and it’s important for people of all ages (and their parents!), take this into consideration as they prepare for Halloween night activities. We’ve put together a comprehensive list of Halloween safety tips that can be used by people of all ages to help lower the chance of a serious injury, and ensure you have as much fun as possible!

Halloween-Infog-Sept2016Safe while on foot

-Be sure to look both ways when you’re crossing a street, and stay on high alert for cars that may not be paying attention.

-Put your electronics away while walking so you aren’t looking down at your phone and can see safety signs and other precautions in front of you.

-Be sure to adhere to all traffic regulations, including crosswalks and traffic signals at intersections. When crossing a road, if there are crosswalks nearby, be sure to utilize those.

Be alert while trick-or-treating

-Children under the age of 12 should have adult supervision while out trick-or-treating.

-Encourage people to stick together in groups so it’s easier to account for everyone involved.

-Trick-or-treat in areas of familiarity to decrease the risk of getting lost.

Halloween near trick-or-treaters

-Be sure to drive slowly and stay on high alert when driving through congested areas of town. Pay special attention to crosswalks or areas of the streets people tend to cross. Sometimes costumes can be hard to see at night.

-Absolutely no texting and driving under any circumstance.

-Take a little extra time and care as you make turns, go through intersections, or pull into driveways in residential areas.

We hope these Halloween safety tips reminded you of the hazards that come with Halloween night, and that you’re able to enjoy America’s spookiest holiday safe and sound!

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® expert tips for relocating south

TMAT061

-Written by Erik Sargent

The leaves are changing, the air is crisp, and the television sets are constantly streaming football, basketball, playoff baseball, and hockey, which can only mean one thing – winter is near! For those that live in the northern regions of the country, these are the last few months before the cold weather sets in and we’re all bundled up inside.

For those who aren’t interested in spending that much time in the cold, they often pack up their belongings, hit the road, and relocate to warmer climates for the winter. This can seem like a daunting task, but thankfully, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK is here to help ensure you’re on the beach in no time!

We’ve compiled a few key areas that are important to tackle as you prepare for this journey, and hope it can create a smooth moving process a for you.

Downsizing and organizing

If you’re relocating south – even just temporarily – then you’ll want to be selective of items you take in addition to being organized. Downsizing and eliminating clutter will take an immense amount of stress off when it comes time to actually begin moving, while also saving space and time.

Here are a few important ideas to keep in mind as you downsize and organize your items:

Plan ahead: Make sure you have a plan in place for how you’re going to tackle downsizing, and stick to it. This helps so that when you’re ready to move, you aren’t wasting time trying to determine what to do with unwanted items.

Determine what’s necessary: Examine the items you’re considering moving, and ask yourself if it’s really necessary to be moved. Have you used or even looked at the item in the last year? Did you forget you even had that item? Would you even miss it if it was gone? Ask yourself a few questions to determine if those items are things you could easily part with.

Packing

Effective packing will get your journey south on the right track! Check out our expert packing tips video, compiled from over 30 years of being leaders in the moving industry. Also, remember these important tips as you pack:

Labels: Take the time label everything so you know what’s in each box.

Sort by importance: Make sure your essential items – like chargers and bathroom supplies – are stored together so you can get them right away upon arrival.

No used boxes: Used boxes run a high risk of breaking, which could result in broken items during the move. Check out the available moving boxes we provide when contact your local TWO MEN AND A TRUCK franchise about a move!

Getting you where you need to go!

Now that you’re organized and packed, the final step is completing the move so you can get to warmer weather! The thought of long-distance relocation can make people shudder, but thankfully, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK is here to help!

We offer an excellent expedited long-distance moving service, using the same outstanding customer service we provide with our local moves to get you anywhere you need to go across the country. The same moving team that loads your belongings is the same moving team that will unload your items at your new place, and we provide you with an exact date of delivery so you can stay on schedule.

For those looking to relocate long-distance but looking for more flexible pricing options, try our new, innovative Value Flex® long-distance moving option!

“The Value Flex model has opened up a new market for our brand, and created a great option for our customers moving a longer distance,” said TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Co-CEO Jon Nobis. “It combines the same great service customers have come to know and love locally, with the efficiency provided by a national logistics network.”

Launched in May of 2017, Value Flex has paved a new path for customers moving long-distance, and brought a new spin to the tradition long-distance experience. With professional loading and unloading services, your items are kept safe in our 16 ft. portable containers from start to finish.

“Value Flex is ideal for those who need long-distance moving services on a budget, and provides the same great customer service and stress-free moving and packing services customers have come to expect with local moves,” said TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Moving Services Director Lindsey Schaibly. “In exchange for a reduced price, customers are given an increased lead time on delivery. Although this may take longer than the expedited long-distance service, dedicated delivery dates are given once a move is booked so customers know exactly when to expect their belongings.”

For those looking to relocate – particularly those interested in moving south to warmer climates this winter – Value Flex® is the perfect option to get you where you need to go.

“The best part of the service is we can now give our customers’ options,” said TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Multi-Unit Franchisee Cory Christensen. “In any sales environment, you want to present the customers with more than one option, and Value Flex gives us that opportunity. TMAT459

The process of home moving is one of the more stressful situations in life, and can be full of obstacles along the way as you plan out how you’ll get all of your belongings from one place to the next. Being proactive prior to move day can greatly alleviate this stress, and make the entire process seamless.

Everyone knows when it comes to moving, you need boxes and packing supplies, but what about the overlooked moving essentials? These often consist of things that are entirely necessary, but can become an afterthought as you work to organize your move.

Fortunately, as the “Movers Who Care®”, we have more than 30 years of experience in the moving industry, and know just what you need to have handy in order to make your move a breeze! Follow along with this helpful tip sheet so you have everything you need at your new home.

Cleaning supplies

Moving items into a new home can create quite the mess, and the last thing you want is to settle into a dirty home. Make sure you have the basic cleaning supplies on hand such as cleaning spray, Clorox wipes, rags and sponges, dishwater and laundry soap, and toilet cleaner.

Cords and chargers

It’s no secret the world revolves electronics, and you want to make sure you have access to these when moving. Bring all the necessary chargers for your electronic items, and extension cords for convenience.

Batteries

From clocks to remotes and everything in between, you’d be amazed at how many objects in your home still use batteries. Make sure you have enough to match these items, and plenty of backups for the future.

Tool kit

This is an absolute must-have when moving into a new home. Whether it’s fixing something, assembling furniture, or hanging décor on the walls – you’re going to want tools around to help you get the job done.

Moving checklist

Organization is key! Have a detailed outline of everything you plan on moving and where you want it to go to prevent leaving something of importance behind.

Plastic bags

There always seems to be a need for plastic bags, especially when moving. They are available for storing, carrying items, organizing, or gathering up unwanted objects for removal.

Bubble wrap and plastic sheeting

Protection for your belongings is crucial, and that’s where the bubble wrap comes into play. Use plastic sheeting to cover your carpets or furniture to help keep them clean as your items get moved in.

Markers and stickers

Use markers or color-coated stickers to keep track of everything and label your moving boxes. This will alert you to where important items are, and can keep you on track with your moving checklist.

Toilet paper/paper towels

Both of these always come in handy, and you’d rather have them and not need them then to need them and not have them.

Food and drinks

Moving in can be tough! Make sure there are plenty of snacks and water on hand as you organize your new home – hydration is key.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® celebrates “National Grandparents Day” every day with THE GRANDMA RULE®

TMAT228

-Written by Erik Sargent

Yesterday on Sunday, September 10th, it was “National Grandparents Day”, a day to take the time to recognize our beloved grandparents and all of the wonderful things they bring into our lives.

For us here at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, every day might as well be considered “National Grandparents Day”, because our loyal senior following are a large focus of what we do, and we pride ourselves on easing their transitions as best as possible. From helping with downsizing moves to long-distance relocations, in-home moving, and providing special training to our employees who work with seniors – our goal is to make life easier for our retired friends.

grandmaeb2One of our strongest company core values is THE GRANDMA RULE®, which was created in honor of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® founder Mary Ellen Sheets’ mother, Helen Eberly, or Grandma Eb for short. In the early stages of the company when Mary Ellen was in need of storage space, Grandma Eb allowed her to park trucks in her backyard. She went on to play a huge part in the development of the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® brand, and the THE GRANDMA RULE® still resonates with employees throughout our system.

brian-stern“THE GRANDMA RULE®, to me, exemplifies everything we want and expect out of our employees and ourselves,” said Brian Stern, a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® multi-unit franchisee in Boston, New Jersey, and Maine. “The idea is to treat each and every one of our customers as if they were our grandmother. If we do that, every customer will be treated with respect, patience, and empathy during difficult moving situations.”

THE GRANDMA RULE® highlights the family atmosphere that has been built here at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, and it is a major reason people are drawn to our brand.

lauren-munson“I believe THE GRANDMA RULE® is such an important core value because it truly represents the culture of this company,” said Lauren Trost, the marketing and sales manager for the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® “Chicago 5” locations. “TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® employees not only practice this core value while at work – it is deeply ingrained in their everyday life. Before I started working at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, the Lansing franchise actually moved my grandma. I witnessed a wonderful display of compassion and strength. For several weeks after her move, my grandma could not stop talking about how impressed she was with the two young men who moved her.”

It’s this kind of attention to detail – especially with the senior crowd – that has helped build the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® brand into what it is today. The care and effort we put into helping our older generation move is appealing to customers, and helps them to feel comfortable when we are handling a delicate situation like a senior move.

Each franchise has special tips and tricks they use, but all of them have a main focus of providing an easy, relaxed moving experience.

Alexa Lanier“Often times, a senior move involves downsizing from a long-term home, and it can be a complicated and emotional experience,” said Alexa Lanier, a multi-unit marketing director for the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton locations. “Our customer service representatives and in-home consultants work with the customers to account for the destination of all items, which can involve multiple stops, dump runs, or storage. Our movers then take the time to make sure every item gets to where it needs to go.”

Working with seniors during the move process to ensure everything will be ok is a big deal, as downsizing and parting with belongings they’ve had for a lifetime can feel like a major loss. It can be difficult for them to let go of certain items due to memories created from these belongings, and it’s important to ease them into the next transition of their life.

“We offer a discount on all of our senior moves,” Stern said. “We also try to send our more patient crews that will take their time and move at the customer’s pace. Often times, senior citizens are less concerned with speed, and just want to understand everything in great detail.”

Check out what some of our loyal customers have had to say about our outstanding senior moving services!

“Our experience was outstanding. I needed help moving my Mom to assisted living. Ben was gracious and professional on the phone – explained all options to me and helped me set up the move within the time frame I needed. Nick called ahead to give me the heads up that they had finished their previous job and were on their way. Nick and Jose were both polite, professional, and friendly. They took good care with Mom’s belongings, and they offered their help in getting everything exactly as we wanted when we arrived at the new location. The move was done within the time (and cost) expected. Overall, an excellent job. Thank you to Nick, Jose and Ben.” – Debra, McHenry, IL

This is the third time we have used TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, they’re excellent! I would highly recommend them for anyone’s moving needs. They have moved my daughters twice, and this past move was for my mother. It was a very emotional time for her and my Pop who has dementia, the gentleman were sweet with them both. The guys came all the way to Boerne from Corpus Christi, worked two days, and it was still less than the other guys. They are good, kind, respectful, hard-working, and fast-moving men who are wonderful to work with. Do not go with the other brand, I know from experience their prices change. Thank you again for your most excellent service!” – Debbie, Corpus Christi, TX

Downsizing made easy with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®

When it comes to moving, some of the most delicate and emotional situations are moves that require downsizing. Downsizing often involves seniors as they look to condense their lives and sell a home they’ve lived and created memories in for the past few decades. Leaving this all behind can be difficult, and the move itself adds extra stress into an already difficult process.

At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, it’s important we take extra care of seniors during the move process and ensure they feel safe and secure as they make this major life transition.

After all, one of our company values is THE GRANDMA RULE®, which is to treat everyone the way you would want your grandma to be treated. We feel this is an important motto to live by, and across our more than 350 locations, we instill this value in each and every employee.

lauren-munson“We understand moving can be a difficult time for senior citizens, so we strive to provide them with a smooth moving experience,” said Lauren Trost, the Marketing and Sales Manager for the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® “Chicago 5” locations. “Our franchise works closely with many senior living facilities, so we are aware of what to do and what not to do, as well as policies and other protocol. Having that extra knowledge and familiarity helps to put the customers’ mind at ease. We make sure our movers and drivers are reminded of THE GRANDMA RULE® before they perform any moves at senior living facilities so they are extra polite, friendly, and respectful to the customer.”

For those beginning to work on downsizing for an upcoming move, it can be an emotionally draining process that requires intense care. To help streamline the process, review this list of questions to help determine what stays and what goes prior to your move:

-Does it have sentimental value?

-Is it broken? If yes, is it fixable?

-Do I love it? Have I used/worn it in the last six months?

-Do I own more than one of these?

-Am I keeping it out of obligation or expectation?

Using Value Flex® to assist with your downsizing move

Many downsizing moves involve relocation long-distance to warmer climates. Long-distance moving can be even more difficult to organize, but now, it doesn’t have to be thanks to our new Value Flex® moving service!

Value Flex® is our new solution to the hassle that has been long-distance moving. When you decide to move with Value Flex®, your items will be loaded into a 16 ft. container at your home by a professionally trained TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® moving crew. This container will be transported to your local TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchise, and then loaded onto a third-party carrier truck to be transported to your new destination.

The box is delivered to the franchise location closest to your new home, and will then be delivered at your new residence by a new TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® moving team. Throughout this entire process, your belongings are kept safe and secure in our containers, and you never have to share space with another customer.

Customers who have used this new, innovative moving service have found the convenience, care, and affordability to be extremely helpful as they work through the moving process.
