Use these 5 professional packing tips for your upcoming move

The calendar has finally turned to March, and while many of you might be thinking of the warmer months soon approaching (we are too!), we’re also thinking about the upcoming busy moving season.

As the weather turns, so does the moving industry, and a large majority of our moves for the year will begin to happen over the next six months. If you’re planning to move soon, there are plenty of things you need to prepare for and plan, and a big one is packing.

Packing is essential to a successful home move, and it goes a long way in taking the stress out of the entire process. Between proper packing and organization, you can significantly reduce the hassle of moving, save yourself time, and possibly even save yourself some money. Sounds like a win!

Thankfully, we’ve learned a thing or two about packing up a home since we began moving people back in the 1980s, and we’re happy to dish out some of our best packing tips.

Follow along!

Start planning well before moving day

You can never be too prepared for moving. Planning ahead will make it easier to take everything in stride, will save you from scrambling, and help you keep better track of what you’re doing with the move. If you get an early start on packing, you’ll have less to worry about come moving day.

Label, label, label

Falling in line with the “organizational” side of things, be sure you label each box clearly when packing. This will help both you and the moving teams handling your belongings to know where each box is going and what is inside.

Room-by-room packing

Like we’ve stated, this is a process which takes time. You can’t knock it out in one day, as nice as it would be to do so. Start going room by room around your home, completing the packing process in chunks to make it more manageable and to leave yourself some room for error.

Protect your belongings

The whole point of packing is to keep your items safe and protected, right? This starts by using professional packing supplies. Moving boxes, bubble wrap, and packing paper go a long way with the safety of your items as they’re loaded up and moved to your new home.

A helpful packing tip to remember: the heavier the item, the smaller the moving box.

Some tips from the professionals

You know who really knows the ins and outs of packing? The frontline team members at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK who do it every day. Here are some of their best tips!

“Have all of your loose items boxed up and packed away, and also make sure to label the boxes. Make sure to have a game plan for unpacking the boxes, too.” – Shawn – Operations Manager – Lorain-Medina, Ohio

“With your packed boxes, take them all into the garage. It’s going to save a lot of time for us with the move and will also save you some money on your bill at the end of the move.” – Anthony – Team Lead – Lincoln, Nebraska

Hear from our experts: Top packing tips for your next home move

TMAT256

Moving season is on the horizon, and if you’re someone who is thinking about a move in 2021, now is the time to start thinking ahead and planning for it.

Two crucial things we tell our customers they should focus on as a move approaches is packing and organization. If you have a good grasp and plan on your packing process, chances are you’re going to have a positive moving experience. However, the idea of packing can seem like a daunting task – and deservedly so. It requires good planning, proper packing supplies, organization like we mentioned above, and time to roll up your sleeves and get it done.

We’re here to help! We offer a full-line of packing supplies that are guaranteed to cover all of your packing needs, and we can even pack for you! Our moving teams are also trained to pack an entire home or just a few rooms.

In the meantime, here are some of our best packing tips to help you get a jump on the process.

Plan ahead!

We’ll keep repeating this for the rest of time – planning ahead will make your move easier. Tackle the packing that needs to be done little by little, day by day, so you don’t have to do it all at once.

Pack things room by room

This builds off the point above, but going room by room is a solid way to take things in stride and chip away at the packing process. It will also help you keep your belongings more organized and give you some room for error should you need to re-pack something.

Label everything

The last thing you want is to arrive at your new home and not know where something is because you forgot to label the box. Be sure to accurately label each box you are packing up with what’s inside and where it needs to go. This will help both you and the moving teams transporting the boxes.

Keep items protected

Proper packing supplies can play a huge role in the safety of your belongings during transport. Using quality moving boxes, bubble wrap, and packing paper will prevent damages as they’re loaded and unloaded from one house to the next.

Here’s a good packing reminder to keep items safe: the heavier the item, the smaller the box. This prevents items from falling out of the bottom.

For even more expert packing tips, here are a few of the best ones we’ve heard from our frontline moving experts – the ones who do the moving and packing each and every day!

“Have all of your loose items boxed up and packed away, and also make sure to label the boxes. Make sure to have a game plan for unpacking the boxes, too.” – Shawn – Operations Manager – Lorain-Medina, Ohio

Top 4 professional packing tips for your upcoming move

TMAT256

People ask us all the time about the best ways to get prepared for an upcoming move. Our answer? Proper packing!

Packing is vital to any move, and will make a difference in not only how fast and efficient moving day goes for you, but also how easy the post-move process is as you adjust to your new home or business. Check out our best packing tips below to help you get started for your next home, apartment, college, or even business move!

Get started early!

This is the best step to planning ahead with your move. If you can get packing out of the way early in the process, you’ll eliminate a massive amount of moving day stress.

Create a plan for packing, go room-by-room, and tackle a little bit of the process each day as you work toward move day. Use this moving day check list to get you on the right track!

Protect your belongings

There’s no point in packing if you’re items aren’t safe and protected. The best way to keep everything safe is by using proper packing supplies such as bubble wrap, packing paper, tape, and moving boxes.

A good tip to remember while packing up your belongings: the heavier the item is, the smaller the box should be.

Pack by room

As we mentioned above, it’s ideal to pack room-by-room. This will help not only keep similar items together, but will also help you in keeping track of where everything is and will help the movers load and unload boxes and furniture in a more organized fashion.

Label everything

You’re probably reading that and thinking “that’s obvious”, but it’s worth mentioning still! If you forget to label your boxes with what’s inside, you’re going to be scrambling and digging through boxes at your new home.

Clearly and accurately label each box so that both you and the moving team know what’s in the box and where it belongs on moving day. If you label the contents inside, this will also help you during the unpacking process, in knowing what you should unpack quickly in your new home, and what can wait a little longer.

Plan ahead

There’s no substitute for proper planning. If you’re able to get a jump on the packing process prior to moving day, it will make your whole moving experience better.

Create a plan, go room-by-room, and take on a little bit each day as you work toward moving day.

Keep items protected

Using the proper packing supplies when moving your items makes a huge difference in keeping your belongings protected during the moving process. Moving boxes, bubble wrap, and packing paper ensure items that are easily breakable, or electronics, stay safe.

Here’s a good reminder: the heavier the item you are moving, the smaller the box should be. This will prevent the bottom of the box from breaking out when moving.

Organize by room

As you’re packing up room-by-room through your house, be sure to keep boxes from the same room together and label them. This will make it easier to determine what is what, and will also let the movers know how they should pack them onto the truck.

Label as much as you can

It may seem obvious, but you wouldn’t believe the difference that labeling can make in the chaos of a home move. Accurately label each box while packing so everyone involved knows what is in the box and where it should go.

Moving soon? Don’t miss these money-saving tips!

TMAT193

When it comes to home moving, there are several tips and tricks we’ve learned over the years to not only make a move easier and more efficient, but save you a little money, too!

An important factor to consider when trying to save money on your next home move is time. Time plays a huge factor with most moving companies, as local moves are typically charged by the hour (this excludes long-distance moving). If you’re able to cut down on the amount of time movers spend at each home, you’re certainly going to cut down on the final bill.

Here are a few helpful tips to eliminate move-day stress, cut down on time, and save you some cash!

Be honest when completing your moving estimate

It may seem obvious, but it’s worth mentioning – it’s important to be honest with the moving company when completing your estimate. Whether you’re completing a virtual in-home consultation, someone is arriving at your home to do the estimate, or you’re doing it over the phone, you want to be as accurate as possible with the staff so they can accurately prepare for your home.

If you fail to mention certain items (especially large pieces of furniture), amount of boxes you have, or aren’t clear on the size of your home, this could add time to the move and require them to make adjustments on the fly.

Disassemble all beds and furniture

Many types of furniture will be disassembled when they are loaded onto the moving truck, so the less time your movers have to spend doing this, the less time they will need to spend on the move overall.

If everything is taken apart when they arrive, they can load it right on to the truck and move on to the next item.

Pack all of your items away

Packing is crucial to the success of any move, and it’s up to the customer to ensure items are packed when moving day arrives. If your items are all packed away and ready when the movers arrive, they can immediately begin loading the moving truck which will speed up the move dramatically.

If you need help with packing, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK moving teams are professionally trained to pack your belongings and can pack as little or as much as you’d like! Or, if you want to pack on your own, we offer a full line of moving boxes and packing supplies that will help with any move.

For more packing tips, click here.

Organize your belongings

If at all possible, place boxes and even furniture you’re able to move, in a central area like the garage or by the front door, so your movers don’t have to go travel throughout the home to retrieve your belongings. If everything is in one, easily accessible area, the movers can easily grab and load the truck.

Be prepared

Above all else, be prepared. Many of our frontline team members have mentioned that nothing beats good planning when it comes to moving day, and doing so will eliminate any last minute change ups, eliminate the need to add more time, and again – save you money!

Five items to avoid packing in a storage unit

TMAT062

When it comes to relocation, downsizing, or just finding a place to keep some of your personal belongings for a designated period of time, storage options can be really handy solutions.

There are a few important things you should look for when finding a storage solution that best fits your needs, but also keep in mind what you can’t keep in a storage unit. Each storage unit facility has their own regulations and guidelines for what can and cannot be kept in their units, and it’s important to find out what those are  prior to making arrangements.

We’ve highlighted five items you should avoid storing.

Scented soaps and candles

Scented soaps and candles seem harmless, right? On the surface, yes. However, when it comes to keeping them in a storage unit, the strong scent is liable to attract vermin such as mice or rats. Anything with a strong smell like perfume, lotions, etc., should be stored with caution.

If you absolutely need to store these items, take extra precaution and wrap them in an airtight container.

Unregistered vehicles

Vehicle storage is still one of the top types of storage options that people seek out, but you want to make sure your vehicle registration is up-to-date and meets the guidelines within your particular state. Some states will classify unregistered vehicles as an abandoned vehicle.

Firearms and ammunition

Firearms in storage units can vary by facility, and generally there isn’t a single “one size fits all” answer. Some storage facilities prohibit the types of firearms stored, while others don’t allow it at all.

As for ammunition – this is not allowed in a storage facility because ammunition falls in the same line as combustible materials and presents a hazard to the storage facility.

Medical supplies

Use caution and talk with the storage company before deciding to store any medical supplies in your storage unit. Many medical equipment items contain radioactive material that isn’t legally allowed to be kept in a storage unit.

Combustible or flammable materials

It seems like common sense, but it’s still worth mentioning that you should never store flammable or combustible materials in a storage unit. These items are dangerous and prohibited, and put your storage unit belongings and the belongings of others in danger.

Keep all of this in mind before you start taking belongings to be kept at a storage facility. If you’re looking for storage needs, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK offers storage options at select franchises around the country. Click here to learn more!

This is arguably the most important part of the entire process. Holiday decorations and items are generally a little fragile, so using the proper care and attention to detail will go a long way with keep these items from getting broken.

Plan ahead

The best tip for packing? Get started early. You don’t want to get caught realizing you haven’t done enough packing leading up to move day, especially when movers are on the way. Create a plan for packing, go room-by-room, and tackle a little bit of the process day-by-day leading up to the move.

Don’t mix up items from different rooms

When you’re packing up your home, keep things organized by room. This makes it easier when you’re unpacking at your new home and figuring out where certain items will go. This goes a long way in eliminating confusion.

Keep your items protected

It’s crucial to use proper packing supplies on delicate or breakable items to keep them protected. This means using packing paper or bubble wrap to ensure breakables and electronics survive the move untouched.

Also remember, the heavier the item, the smaller the box. The last thing you want is to load a box that’s too heavy, and the bottom to break. For more detailed packing tips, click here.

Label everything

Something that might seem simple at the surface is actually one of the most important steps of packing. Be sure to accurately and clearly label each box while packing so that movers know where to place them in your new home, and you know what’s inside as you unpack.

Use these 4 holiday packing tips to ease your holiday fatigue

tmat118

With the bustling holiday season now behind us, that means the fun decorations and lights must come down and get packed into storage for the next 11 months until it’s time to do it again!

Although it’s not always an enjoyable task (hence why we still see Christmas lights in February!) but with the proper planning and execution, it doesn’t have to be such a burden.

We’ve put together a few quick and helpful tips to make the holiday season clean up a breeze.

Have a plan

Taking down the holiday decorations and getting everything moved and packed can’t be finished in 20 minutes – it takes time and planning to get the job done right and to get those breakable items stored away safe and sound.

Examine your current situation, pick a place to start, and go room-by-room as you take everything down, carefully and efficiently wrapping and packing them away. This will also help when it comes to organizing your belongings in storage.

Boxes, boxes, boxes

There’s no such thing as “too many” boxes, especially around the holidays, and that’s why it’s important to have an abundance on-hand to ensure everything has a place to go.

Boxes will provide enough space to keep everything, and will also make moving items into a closet or storage that much easier and organized. Be sure to label each box so that when next year comes, you can find exactly what you’re looking for!

Put away that extra furniture

Chances are that at some point during the holiday season, you had to get out extra furniture to accommodate for guests during holiday parties and visits. Whether this furniture will be moved into another room, a closet, the garage, or storage – be sure to only move what you can handle.

If there is too much to move or something that is too heavy, give our movers a call – they’re happy to help you move items in your home!

Pack with a purpose

Even more so than normal, packing away holiday items requires extra care and attention to detail, as these are often specialty items that can be fragile or easily broken. Remember to use proper packing supplies like packing paper, tissue paper, and bubble wrap to protect those ornaments and decorations as they go back into boxes. It’s also a good idea to pack ornaments in our specialty dish pack box where there are sections that are perfect for wrapped ornaments.

Always keep in mind, the heavier the items, the smaller the box. Be For additional packing tips from our moving professionals, click here.
