What you should consider before moving into a rental property

TMAT113

We’re cruising through the spring months and as we head into the summer season we get into the time of year that we call the busy moving season.

Some might be moving into a new home or moving their business, but another area of moving we see often during the spring and summer months is with rental properties – mainly apartments and condos. As leases come to an end, those who choose to live in rental properties – or those looking for one for the first time – will be searching for the best fit for them as they look to sign their next lease.

Like any type of moving, apartment and condo moving brings its own unique set of challenges and to-do lists, but unlike home moving, you aren’t dealing with mortgages or other house-related issues. Instead, you take on things like renter’s insurance, deposits, and leases.

We’re experts in apartment and condo moving and have handled just about every situation imaginable, so we put together a few important pieces you should know if your next move is into a new rental property.

Use extensive research to find the best fit for you

This should be the first step of any apartment or condo search. In any instance where you are signing a lease, you are locked in for a set amount of time, so you want to make sure you’re completely comfortable with the situation before signing.

Make sure you are comfortable with the area you are moving, the price range of the rent, and with the amenities being offered or the things required of you as a tenant. It’s also encouraged to go take a visit of the property before signing.

Know all the details of what you’re paying

There’s generally a list of fees required when you sign up for a lease, like security deposits, a month’s rent in advance, and paying for additional appliances. It’s important to sit down with the landlord and go over each cost expected of you so you are fully aware of how much you are paying.

Ask questions at signing

As you sit down for your final meeting with the landlord to sign your lease, use this time to ask any final questions you might have about your contract, the facilities, or just about leasing in general. Be sure to review everything you are signing so you understand what is expected of you.

Buy renter’s insurance

This is an absolute must for anyone who is renting. This will give you peace of mind as a renter, and also keep your personal belongings protected should some unfortunate instance occur. Whether it’s a break-in, a flood, or a fire – you’ll be covered and will be able to get back some of what you lost.

Set up your utilities in advance

Once you know you’ll be signing your lease for a new rental, begin contacting the necessary utility companies in your area to get accounts set up with what you’ll need. Some apartments and condos have certain utilities included with your rent.

Complete a move in checklist

Once move in day arrives and you start bringing your belongings into your new home, the landlordwill provide you with some type of move in checklist to assess the current state of your rental property. Be sure to go around and examine everything to check for any damages or things missing and write them down so you aren’t charge for it at a later date.

Storage crates stacked in warehouse

Utilizing a storage unit? Here are 5 items you’ll want to avoid packing into your storage unit.

TMAT051

Storage can really take stress off your plate, whether you’re in the middle of relocating, undergoing home renovations, or you just need somewhere to keep a few belongings that are in the way.

Finding a storage unit to fit your needs can be a challenge – here are some helpful tips for those who are interested in storage – but it’s also important to know the items you can’t put into storage. All storage facilities have their own guidelines and regulations for the facility, so it’s important to work with them before purchasing storage space to determine what can and cannot go into your storage unit.

There are some basic items which should never be placed into storage – we’ll cover these below!

Medical supplies

Be sure to take extra caution and ask your storage unit about their rules with medical supplies. Some medical equipment contains radioactive material, which isn’t legally allowed to be kept in storage.

Also – you don’t want to find yourself needing something related to medical supplies when it’s packed away in a storage unit somewhere.

Combustible or flammable items

This seems like common sense, but it’s still worth pointing out. Items which are combustible or flammable shouldn’t be kept in a storage unit for any reason, as it brings an element of danger for both your belongings and other storage units in the facility.

Firearms and ammunition

When it comes to firearms, be sure to check with the storage unit facility on their policies regarding these items – some prohibit the types of firearms allowed in storage, while others ban it entirely.

Ammunition, on the other hand, is not allowed in storage unit for the same reasons mentioned above: it falls in line with what’s considered to be combustible and presents a hazard to the storage facility.

Unregistered vehicles

Vehicle storage is still one of the top types of storage options that people seek out, but you want to make sure your vehicle registration is up-to-date and meets the guidelines within your particular state. Some states will classify unregistered vehicles as an abandoned vehicle.

Soaps and scented candles

While it initially might seem like a big deal when you see this, it actually can be. These types of materials often attract mice or rats, which can become a huge problem for your storage until. Anything giving off a smell like perfume or lotion should be stored with caution.

Keep all of this in mind before you start taking belongings to be kept at a storage facility. If you’re looking for storage needs, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK offers storage options at select franchises around the country. Click here to learn more!

Four quick and easy tips to help you navigate through moving day

TMAT211

Now that 2021 is here, maybe you’ve decided this is the year to finally complete that home move you’ve been dreaming about – which then leads to this great question: Now what?

If you know there’s a move in your future, try hiring professional movers! Moving day can be chaotic and difficult to tackle on your own, but with the help of professional movers like TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, moving day can become a lot less stressful and a lot more enjoyable as we take care of all the hard work and heavy lifting for you!

From packing to finalizing the sale of your home, buying a new home, hiring the movers, and so on – it can be overwhelming. A little bit of planning goes a long way for having a successful moving day, and we’ve come up with a few quick and easy tips for you to follow to eliminate as much stress as possible.

Protect your old house

Even though you’re leaving this home, you’ll still want to leave it in good shape for the next owners. Thankfully, we’re prepared and ready to help with this, as we provide items like floor runners, door jambs, carpet shields, and railing covers to help keep your home protected and avoid damages.

Make sure that when moving day comes, there is a clear path inside and outside for the movers to safely navigate. If you are moving during the winter months in a place where it’s snowy, be sure the sidewalks and driveways are properly shoveled to cut down on time and to improve safety.

Get an essentials bag for your new home

With the process of moving, there’s a solid chance that everything you own is probably packed away and ready for transport. This also means it might not be easy to get to when you arrive at the new home.

Pack a bag of essentials to get you through the first couple of nights when you arrive at your new home that can hold you over until you begin the process of unpacking. Toothbrushes, chargers, batteries, toilet paper – anything like this is a good idea to have handy.

Have food and drinks readily available

Moving day is a lot of, well, moving! Since the fridge is probably cleared out, having a bag of snacks and a cooler with some drinks is always helpful – or maybe you just hop on the phone and order some pizza!

If you have kids, get them involved

While you’re busy taking care of the important details required for your move, it’s crucial not to keep your kids in the dark about the entire process either. It can be a difficult process for them as they are transitioning to a new home and possibly new town or school, so it’s a good idea to make them feel like they are involved in the packing and moving process.

Complete your stress-free downsizing move with these 4 simple tips

TMATAUGUST049

Summer is winding down, the trees are about to start changing colors, and for many this is a time where they begin to toss items they no longer need and work on downsizing their home.

Downsizing can seem like a daunting task when moving as you decide on how to get rid of belongings while transitioning into a smaller living space. This is incredibly popular for people who are starting a life in retirement, or who want to get away to a home with less size and responsibility. The biggest hurdles of downsizing come with deciding on what you need moving forward and what you can get rid of, something that is not an easy task.

Developing an effective plan on how you want to downsize can take the stress out of this type of move, and we’ve come up with some helpful tips to make this process easier. Follow along!

Start your planning early

In order to decide what will stay and what will go when downsizing, you need to do a full assessment of your belongings.

Start by going through all of your things well in advance of your desired move day so you can determine if there’s a logical need for certain items when you move. If you see something and can’t figure out a reason to keep it right away, it’s probably best to part ways with it. Bringing something just to bring it when moving to a new home will just take up space.

Ask yourself how much you’ll use a certain item

Building off the idea from above, it’s important to determine how much use certain belongings will get.

If you see something and your initial thought is “not that often”, it’s time to get rid of it. This mindset will become especially useful when you’re looking at items that you’ve been storing away for years without using – now is the best time to get rid of them. If you have items that you need to get rid of but don’t want to take care of it yourself, we now offer junk removal services at select locations!

Practice patience

A downsizing move and the process that it requires won’t in happen in one day – it takes time. Once you have an ideal move date in mind, work slowly, day-by-day, to chip away at the necessary tasks in order to eliminate as much stress as possible when moving day arrives.

Be flexible

The moving process can be complicated, and that’s why staying flexible and calm throughout the process is important. Plans can change, last-second decisions can come up, and opinions can differ as you work toward completing your move.

If you’re looking for help on completing an upcoming downsizing move, we’re here to help! Whether it’s helping with the entire move or just assisting with packing, delivery, or loading and unloading – our professional moving teams are ready to help. Moving soon? Don’t miss these money-saving tips!

TMAT193

When it comes to home moving, there are several tips and tricks we’ve learned over the years to not only make a move easier and more efficient, but save you a little money, too!

An important factor to consider when trying to save money on your next home move is time. Time plays a huge factor with most moving companies, as local moves are typically charged by the hour (this excludes long-distance moving). If you’re able to cut down on the amount of time movers spend at each home, you’re certainly going to cut down on the final bill.

Here are a few helpful tips to eliminate move-day stress, cut down on time, and save you some cash!

Be honest when completing your moving estimate

It may seem obvious, but it’s worth mentioning – it’s important to be honest with the moving company when completing your estimate. Whether you’re completing a virtual in-home consultation, someone is arriving at your home to do the estimate, or you’re doing it over the phone, you want to be as accurate as possible with the staff so they can accurately prepare for your home.

If you fail to mention certain items (especially large pieces of furniture), amount of boxes you have, or aren’t clear on the size of your home, this could add time to the move and require them to make adjustments on the fly.

Disassemble all beds and furniture

Many types of furniture will be disassembled when they are loaded onto the moving truck, so the less time your movers have to spend doing this, the less time they will need to spend on the move overall.

If everything is taken apart when they arrive, they can load it right on to the truck and move on to the next item.

Pack all of your items away

Packing is crucial to the success of any move, and it’s up to the customer to ensure items are packed when moving day arrives. If your items are all packed away and ready when the movers arrive, they can immediately begin loading the moving truck which will speed up the move dramatically.

If you need help with packing, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK moving teams are professionally trained to pack your belongings and can pack as little or as much as you’d like! Or, if you want to pack on your own, we offer a full line of moving boxes and packing supplies that will help with any move.

For more packing tips, click here.

Organize your belongings

If at all possible, place boxes and even furniture you’re able to move, in a central area like the garage or by the front door, so your movers don’t have to go travel throughout the home to retrieve your belongings. If everything is in one, easily accessible area, the movers can easily grab and load the truck.

Be prepared

Above all else, be prepared. Many of our frontline team members have mentioned that nothing beats good planning when it comes to moving day, and doing so will eliminate any last minute change ups, eliminate the need to add more time, and again – save you money!
