An alignment in core values led to a working relationship between Convoy of Hope and TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®

Making a difference in the world is only obtainable when people come together and use the resources around them, and for the faith-based organization Convoy of Hope, this was the exact mindset that helped it come to fruition.

Convoy of Hope – which is based out of Springfield, Missouri – was founded in 1994 with the plans of making a difference in communities all around the world, mainly by working to feed children through feeding initiatives, community outreaches, and disaster response.

“Most of what we do has a focus on feeding,” said Eric Neubauer, corporate relations director for Convoy of Hope. “Secondarily, the flip-side of that coin is we’ve also been an early responder in times of natural disasters. There was a point in our mission where we felt like responding and being a part of relief efforts was important to who we are and what we did.”

Since the organization has grown over nearly 25 years of operation, Convoy of Hope now has their focus set in six main areas: community events, children’s feeding, disaster services, agriculture, women’s empowerment, and rural compassion.

The number of people reached by Convoy of Hope are staggering when you examine what they’ve been able to do since 1994, which includes 100 million people served, 262 million meals distributed, and 615,000 volunteers mobilized to help children, families, and survivors of disasters. These numbers also include 115 countries served and $805 million worth of food and supplies distributed.

It’s no small task to be on the ground helping at so many different places for so many different causes, but a strong infrastructure allows Convoy of Hope to make it possible.

“Part of what gives us the ability to do that and what makes us so unique is our infrastructure,” Neubauer said. “Think of us like a logistics organization. We have a fleet of semis, we have an international headquarters here in Springfield with a 3,000 square foot building with essential supplies and products. We also have regional warehouses in different parts of the world, including Haiti, Asia, Puerto Rico, and Houston.”

This impressive infrastructure allows Convoy of Hope to adapt on the go to whatever the  disaster situation may need and stay prepared for any situation.

“Because of our logistical capacity and our infrastructure, we are not dependent on partnering with A, B, and C organization when deploying of times of disaster,” Neubauer said. “Because we have our infrastructure, we are at the disaster and supplying what we need for the disaster on our own.”

A partnership based on a common goal

 

At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, finding any and all ways to give back to the communities we operate in and the people we serve has been our goal over the last 30 years.

For Greg Micklos, franchisee of the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Pensacola, Fla., location, this same sentiment was on his mind last year when Hurricane Harvey crashed the shores of the Gulf Coast. The damage was substantial, people needed help, and he knew his moving team and his trucks could be of use. The next step was finding a partner to put these resources to good use.

Micklos had been organizing both the supplies to be donated and also organizing a fleet of trucks to head to Houston when a mutual connection led him to Convoy of Hope.

greg micklos 013“I was involved in Hurricane Floyd and Dennis in 1999 when I was living in North Carolina, I have experienced hurricane devastation myself,” said Micklos. “I knew a lot of people in the Florida area would be coming in and out of disaster areas, and knew we would need some kind of credentials to get into devastation areas. Finding an organization like Convoy of Hope to help us actually get in there and get out without making a scene – we knew they needed supplies, and it was a great fit for us.”

A couple of quick phone calls later, and TWO MEN AND A TRUCK and Convoy of Hope had plans in the works to tag-team these hurricane relief efforts.

“When Eric Neubauer from Convoy of Hope and I got together and actually developed a strategic plan together to figure out what we had and what we could do, it just seemed to be a phenomenal fit,” Micklos said.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK’s resources helped boost the efforts of Convoy of Hope, who was already established in the disaster areas.

“For us, it just makes sense to ask if there is a logistics connection, and if it could radically improve our capacity,” Neubauer said. “People want do something to help, and TWO MEN AND A TRUCK has tons of trucks and people.”

Since Hurricane Harvey, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK has continued to work together with Convoy of Hope where it makes sense, as each organization works hard to make a difference when possible.

Micklos noted that over the last year, he has remained in contact with Convoy of Hope and kept an open dialogue about what has worked in their relief efforts and what hasn’t as they plan to coordinate in the future. With the ability to provide both trucks and man-power on relatively short notice, the two organizations have developed an understanding with one another and are working to build their partnership.

“Our core values align so well,” Micklos said. “We’re all for one, one for all, and we can’t just do it by ourselves. [Founder] Mary Ellen Sheets said it best – ‘all of us are stronger than one of us’, so you look at that and we’re right there with Convoy of Hope sharing the same values.”

As we enter the month of November, all around the country, we come together and celebrate the heroic acts and sacrifices of the men and women who have bravely served in our armed forces.

Freedom isn’t free, and it’s important to take the time to recognize what each and every one of these individuals has done to give us the life we all live today. At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, these sacrifices are not lost on us, and we work our hardest to make sure we give back as much as possible to our veterans all over the United States.

Each fall around the time of Veteran’s Day, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchises run our Movers for Military campaign, where the franchises partner with local schools, businesses, and veteran’s shelters in their community to collect essential care items that can be donated to veterans in need.

These donations go a long way in helping our veterans maintain a good quality of life, and can often help them get back on their feet after hard times.

“We feel this is a good fit because we employ so many veterans at each of our locations,” said Charlene Bush, marketing manager for four TWO MEN AND A TRUCK locations in Southeast, Mich. “Some of our longest tenured movers and drivers are veterans, and we wanted to be able to give back and show our appreciation for their service.”

Hiring veterans

Along with the Movers for Military campaign, another way TWO MEN AND A TRUCK works to give back to veterans is by hiring them in a variety of roles.

From drivers all the way up through franchisees – and even at our Home Office location – we employ veterans for many different positions in our company, and they make up a big portion of who we are as a company.

The team environment allows for a seamless transition from military life, and as Pasadena, Cali., Move Manager Cody Setser pointed out, these similar works styles are easy to adjust to.

“The main similarities are honestly just staying motivated and being disciplined,” Setser said. “When you’re supposed to show up, show up, because people are counting on you and it can screw up everyone’s day. Just be fair – you can still have fun while being disciplined at the same time, and that’s an important thing.”

Setser joined TWO MEN AND A TRUCK after serving six years in the Marine Corps Infantry, and immediately joined the company after his time in the service.

One of the biggest reasons he’d recommended the company to someone is due to the team-environment that TWO MEN AND A TRUCK instills at each franchise location.

“It’s a solid group of guys, and it has the same basic comradery that you can get with the Marine Corps,” Setser said. “You’re doing tough work, but at the same time, you can still have fun with it and there are a lot of similarities. It’s a great group of people to work with.”

For Jerry Swartz, team lead at the Central Illinois, Ill., franchise who also served seven years in the Army, he noted the chain of command as a major similarity from military life to TWO MEN AND A TRUCK life.

“The biggest similarity is the chain of command,” Swartz said. “That’s always important, otherwise you just have people walking into offices and it’s very chaotic. Then, just that daily discipline of showing up every day and being dependable.”

Local animal shelters work tirelessly to get homeless pets into loving homes

As the pet population continues on a  constant rise, so too does the need to find the proper solutions for handling these animals and providing them not only with the appropriate care and treatment, but also finding them happy, forever homes.

All across the globe – from big cities down to small communities – are working to find the answers for dealing with homeless animals, mainly to prevent them from suffering neglect and potential death. It’s a complex issue, filled with hurdles like finding resources, having the proper space to house an animal, and having the proper staffing to provide support.

It’s up to the hardworking individuals at animal shelters and rescues to not only come up with the solutions for these animals, but to continue doing so each and every day with such constant turnover.

“We’re an open admission shelter, which means that we are completely open to the public and that all animals are welcome here from our service area,” said Wendy Welch, communications director for the Human Society of Huron Valley, located in Ann Arbor, Mich. “Thanks to the support we have in the community, we are able to treat many animals that come through our doors, and save the mass majority of them. We have about a 97 percent save rate, and an incredibly high adoption rate as well.”

The facilities at Huron Valley feature a full-service veterinary clinic that is open to the public, and they are able to provide treatment to most animals that come through their doors.

“We try to keep rates low [at the veterinary clinic], because our ultimate goal is to keep animals in homes,” Welch said. “Our vet staff takes a look at them and can treat them for different things. If there is something beyond the scope of what we are able to do here, we have partners in the community that can help as well. We also have behavior specialists that can help with differing conditions animals may have.”

Other facilities like the Heartland Animal Shelter, located in Northbrook, Ill., focus their efforts in providing safety for animals who are in danger, particularly ones who are on the streets and facing euthanasia.

“We get animals from all different situations,” said Stephanie Mueller-Simpson, executive director for Heartland Animal Shelter. “We will take owner surrenders sometimes, but mostly, we try to focus on animals that are in danger. Many of our cats and dogs come straight off the streets, and most of our dogs and cats come from municipal shelters where they are on the euthanasia list because there just isn’t room for them.”

Finding the resources

With organizations like these, money and resources can often be tight, and without the proper backing, they aren’t able to treat as many animals.

“One major challenge for us is the nature of being a no-kill, nonprofit means that we are a private organization, so we run entirely on donations,” Mueller-Simpson said. “So, if we don’t have particular items donated or money donated, we just can’t provide. That’s always an on-going challenge.”

It’s a difficult road relying on donations, and in order for a place like Heartland to operate, they need the money from any source possible and from people who care as much about animals as they do.

Another aspect that allows animal shelters and rescues to operate on a day-to-day basis is from volunteers in the communities they operate. Whether it’s with something simple like hosting community events or participating in the various volunteer programs these shelters offer, it provides a great service to the organizations trying to operate at a high level.

“We are fortunate to have many foster parents, so in addition to the space we have at our facilities, we have foster parents in the community who are able to take in the animals,” Welch said. “Whether it’s a medical emergency or a behavioral problem where the animal needs one-on-one attention, they are taken care of.”

Help from those in the community

22365597_1772764639425131_5775562813298348519_nThe impact of donations and volunteer work are hard to measure as shelters house hundreds of animals each year, and it’s people in the community who make the difference.

Movers for Mutts was a program developed by the company, and franchises who elect to run this during the fall months use their moving services and equipment to help transport food, toys, and other essential care items collected in the community for local shelters or rescues that need it most.

“It’s very important to us to give back with efforts like Movers for Mutts, because we have been in this community for a long time, and the community has been good to us,” said Eric St. Pierre, co-franchisee at the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Colorado Springs, Colo. location. “It’s the least we can do. We want the community to know how much we appreciate them, and we want to help out animals, too.”

Not only does the charitable work go toward a great cause in the community, it also gives the franchise team members a break from the everyday grind and a chance to make a difference.

“We order the materials, make up donation boxes, and get in contact with local shelters who need the help,” St. Pierre said. “I think it gives our team members something different to focus on and takes away from the monotony of work. Our workers are extremely passionate about it.”

Join the cause

“There are so many ways to help,” Welch said. “We have many volunteer opportunities from youth volunteers to adults, who can do anything from laundry and administrative assistance to dog walking and cat comforting – these are the most popular ones. Even more skilled things – we have them help out with our dog play groups and dog pack walks, and many other things.”

Outside assistance to these types of organizations is crucial, and gives people a chance to help better protect the lives of these animals and take stress off of the organizations working to save them.

Whether you’re working with one tasks mentioned above, working to become a foster parent, donating your time with their volunteer activities, or just handing over a cash donation – everything helps.

“Just spreading the word is such a major thing,” said Mueller-Simpson. “There will always be issues with pet stores and breeders, and there will always be an overpopulation of animals. Spreading the word about why adoption is important can make a big difference.”

Don’t organize everything all at once

Downsizing and packing can’t be done in just a few hours – it takes time and patience to get the job done right. As previously mentioned, have a plan for each room and tackle them one by one.

Does this fit with your next step?

This is one of the toughest questions when evaluating what items will be moved, but one of the most crucial. If an item doesn’t make logistical sense and won’t be of much use at your next home, it’s best to part with it now.

Taking it along to the next location will only take up space and effort.

Is it broken and can it be fixed?

Some items you own may be on the fence between “useful” and “garbage”, and this is another tough decision that needs to be made when downsizing.

If something can be fixed or repaired before your move, keep it! If there’s no chance of either of those ever happening, send it to the curb.

How often is it being used?

Many of your belongings may seem important at first glance, but in reality, might not be of any use. As you’re going around organizing and determining what gets packed, asked yourself how much you’ve been using each item.

If the answer is “not often”, toss it! This will save you the hassle of dealing with it at a later time, and will also making the moving process much easier. Another good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used the item in a year, don’t take it with you,

Stay flexible!

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK franchises gearing up to give back this fall through charitable campaigns

At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, we live by the core value of giving back to the communities where we live and work. Locations across the country donate countless hours each year to a variety of charities, including Toys for Tots, United Way, Habitat for Humanity and more. In 2017 alone, our franchises donated more than $3 million worth of moving services.

In addition to working with charitable programs year-round, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK locations also incorporate our own community support programs in their local communities.

Each fall our franchisees gear up for various campaigns, such as Movers for Military, Movers for Meals®, Movers for Mutts® and Truckload of Warmth. The goal is for each franchise to get involved in their communities and make a difference — with more than 300 franchises operating in 43 states, our system has the ability to leave a nationwide impact starting at the local level!

The campaigns:

Movers for Military: A fall collection drive created to show support for the brave men and women who sacrificed to protect our freedoms.

Movers for Meals: Created to support families in the community facing hunger by partnering with schools, business, food pantries, and local shelters to collect non-perishable food items.

Movers for Mutts: Created to raise donations for local shelters who care for and foster stray animals

Truckload of Warmth: A collection drive for new and gently used winter clothing, such as coats, hats, gloves, and scarves.

Each of these programs are designed to raise awareness of a certain issue families and individuals are facing across the country. In response, we generate community involvement and support through the simple act of donating to those in-need.

Movers for Military

“This year, we decided to do Movers for Military, as it is more personal for our franchise,” said Janelle Ishman, marketing manager for four Greater Philadelphia area franchises, who partnered with Operation Yellow Ribbon in southern New Jersey to run their campaign. “We have an operations manager who previous served, and have hired other military members. We like to give back to the community, especially our veterans.”

Charlene Bush, the marketing manager for the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Ann Arbor, Brighton, Brownstown, and Oakland Southwest, Mich., locations, is also planning to run Movers for Military this year.

Movers for Mutts

Each franchise partnered with a different veteran organization in their area for 2018, and with all of the franchises employing multiple veterans, it was a good fit for them as a franchise group and also a good way to give back. Just last week, they delivered an electric wheelchair to a 70-year old veteran in Detroit that was donated to their franchise.

“We really are the ‘Movers Who Care®’,” Bush said. “We need to live that out, and it needs to be a part of our culture. I believe that it builds trust within an organization, as well as in the community, when TWO MEN AND A TRUCK is helping people and lending support.”

For Amy Gladieux, the marketing and recruiting manager at the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Cleveland location, she used a variety of connections to partner with seven different realtor offices, two networking organizations, a bank, a library, a dance studio, and a minor league baseball team in the Cleveland are to run Movers for Meals.

“Giving back to the community is one of the reasons I decided to work for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK,” said Gladieux. “Not only can we help out those in need of moving, but through these campaigns, we can have a big impact on the communities where we work.”

Without support from individuals and organizations in our local communities, these campaigns wouldn’t be possible. We were able to donate more the $3 million in moving services alone for 2017, and we hope to expand the reach and impact of these campaigns by exceeding our 2017 collection total of 145,000 items overall.

Making sure your new home is toxin free

You’ve found the perfect home, packed up all your belongings, and you’re hitting the road! While it’s important to keep track of all your belongings to ensure they make it to your new place in one piece, it’s worthwhile to keep a few other concerns in mind. The house might be new to you, but there could be decades worth of bad decisions you could potentially have to deal with and should be on the lookout for.

Chipping paint

Peeling, cracking, and chipping paint may be more than just an eyesore. If your new home was built prior to 1978, the paint may contain lead. Toxic paint is still present in millions of homes across the United States, but has often been covered with layers of newer paint over the years. The paint is rarely an issue when it’s in good condition, but ingesting old paint chips or dust can eventually cause lead poisoning.

Lead accumulates in the body and is stored in the teeth and bones. Although anyone is susceptible to lead poisoning, children face an especially high risk.

Signs of lead poisoning include:

  • Anemia
  • Hypertension
  • Renal impairment
  • Damage to the reproductive organs
  • Impaired IQ and cognitive function in children, believed to be irreversible

It is impossible to determine if your paint contains lead just by looking at it, so it may be best to have your home inspected by a professional before doing any renovation work. There are two types of tests that can detect lead-containing paint – an inspection and a risk assessment. Completing the inspection can alert you to sources of potential lead exposure to assure the paint maintains good condition.

Detectors galore

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, tasteless, invisible gas released whenever fuel is burned. No one is immune to carbon monoxide poisoning and more than 400 Americans die each year from unintentional poisoning.

Common symptoms of CO poisoning include:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Upset stomach
  • Vomiting
  • Chest pain
  • Confusion

Appliances should be serviced every year by a qualified professional to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. As an additional safeguard, install a battery-operated CO detector in your home and check the battery each spring and fall when you change the time on your clocks. The detector should be placed outside of the bedroom so it can wake you up if CO levels exceed safe limits, and needs to be replaced every five years.

Airborne issues

Americans spend 93 percent of their time indoors, so maintaining good indoor air quality is important. If your home was built between 1930 and 1980, there may have been asbestos used during its construction. Asbestos is a naturally-occurring, microscopic mineral able to resist heat and most chemical reactions. Due to those properties, it was used in a variety of items such as insulation, flooring, ceiling tiles, furnaces, broilers, and wallpaper. Asbestos is the only known cause of mesothelioma cancer and has been outlawed in more than 60 countries.

Asbestos causes problems when materials and products containing it are damaged, allowing fibers to become airborne and possibly inhaled. If inhaled or ingested, the asbestos fibers may become embedded in the lining of the organs, including the lungs, heart or abdomen. In many cases, it can take 20 to 50 years for symptoms of an asbestos-related disease to manifest. Although mesothelioma is rare, its prognosis is poor.

If your home was built between the 1930s and 1970s, it is in your best interest to have an abatement professional inspect the space. If the asbestos-containing materials are in good condition, they can be monitored and encapsulated to prevent further problems from occurring. If the products are in poor condition, they may have to be completely removed. Removal is not cheap, but it pays dividends later on.

Damp disasters

Whether it’s on bread or in your bathroom, mold can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, heating and air conditioning systems. It can also be brought indoors on clothing, shoes, bags, and pets. Typically, mold will grow in places with heavy moisture due to leaks in roofs, windows, or pipes, and paper, cardboard, ceiling tiles, and wood products are all good conduits for growth. In other cases, mold can grow in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpeting, fabric, and upholstery.

If you find mold in your home it is important to not only address the growth, but fix the source of the moisture. Mold can be controlled through decreasing humidity levels, and promptly fixing leaky roofs, windows, and pipes. Shower, laundry, and cooking areas should also have proper ventilation to discourage mold growth. Keep moisture in check to preserve your new home.
