Customer Rob Derderian of Pasadena, California, was kind enough to let us get a sneak peek into his home move last month, and was able to shed some insight on what it was like to have TWO MEN AND A TRUCK’s help with a home move.

Here’s what he had to say!

Why are you moving?

“We are moving because we sold this house, a friend of mine bought it. I already live in another location, so this was a second house, so we are liquidating it and we’re getting out. We’re taking the things out of it and moving them to a couple different places and just getting everything out of here.”

How did you learn about TWO MEN AND A TRUCK?

“A few years ago my son and wife were referred to TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, and that’s how we got hooked up this time. My son moved around during college a few times and my wife contacted TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, I guess after contacting a few other movers, and were satisfied with what they heard from TWO MEN AND A TRUCK. So, they did a couple of moves a few years ago and this time around when we decided we had to find a mover again, we just went right back to TWO MEN AND A TRUCK.”

What was your initial impression of the movers?

“These guys are good guys – young, strong, healthy specimens, so that’s a good thing because it’s a lot more than I can lift or pack or move. They’re very polite, nice, and clean, doing a good job and wrapping things up as I would expect or any customer would expect, and I’m happy with it.”

Talk about the moving experience with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK.

“The moving experience is going well. I haven’t done this for over 30 years, so I didn’t really know what to expect. Planning is really important, planning in advance is important, and contacting the movers in advance is important. In my line of work I’m a project manager, so I tried to line things up with the way you’re supposed to when you have a big project, so it’s going according to plan. I didn’t expect anything different, so I think we’re OK.”

What advice would you give to customers about to complete a home move?

“I would say that if you cross the line where you know you’re going to move, you make plans immediately. You contact your movers, you come up with a checklist. [This checklist] can be found on the website of the mover. You start going down the checklist, you start to plan everything in advance as best as possible, you decide where everything is going to go. We actually color-tagged everything in the house as far as exactly where we want it to go. We did a walk-through with the movers when they got here, so I think the early planning is really important. It’s important to not have any surprises later.”

“Because I would share a good experience. If I have a good experience, I’m happy to make referrals, if it’s not a good experience I’m probably not going to make good referrals. I have no problem with referring TWO MEN AND A TRUCK.”

According to MovingLabor.com, the peak moving season usually begins in April and continues until September, with an average of 40 million people in the United States completing moves each year and an estimated 80% of that number coming during the peak moving season. That’s a lot of moving! As the nation’s largest franchised moving company, this is our time to shine, and we are more than ready to tackle Busiest Move Weekend with the highest levels of customer service and care found in the moving industry.

How to effectively combine two living spaces into one in a new home

Moving in with a significant other is an exciting milestone for any couple, but if it’s a new experience, it can seem a little overwhelming. Before getting caught in the excitement, there are a few steps that can help to make the transition into your new shared space a little easier.

Combining two interior styles into one can be a challenge and may spark some frustration between you and your partner. But, luckily for you, we have some tips on how to avoid the arguments, and create the perfectly styled home of your dreams that features both of your unique tastes.

Sorting through the old

Packing can be a headache, and it might seem like a daunting task, but it’s also a great opportunity to sort through some old items. When packing up two spaces, there’s bound to be duplicate appliances and furnishings, so this is a great time to make a list of the items you don’t need, items you can take with you to the new space, and items you are lacking. Before throwing away any items you don’t want to move to your new place, consider donating, selling, or even refurbishing to make the old, new.

Donating items is an effortless and quick solution to unloading old furnishings you no longer need or want. Try researching local thrift shops or charitable organizations that would accept furniture and electronics to create an affordable option for others looking to cost effectively furnish their homes.

Or, just set up a garage sale in your own front lawn to save money on the vending cost.

Refurbishing old furniture is another creative way to give your old pieces new life, while saving some money. All you need to do is take a trip to your local hardware or craft store for some sand paper, paint, and brushes.

Make it a fun creative experience for you and your partner, and spend some time in front of a variety of paint swatches to determine which accent colors you would like to bring into your new space. Having a creative project to focus on is a great way to add some fun within the stressful process of moving, and keep you and your partner focused on the excitement of your new transition.

In with the new, and combining styles

When you’re packed and ready to move into your new shared space, it’s time to reference that packing list one more time, to determine what you both are lacking in terms of furnishings. After settling in and establishing what rooms need what, it’s time to hit the showrooms or online shops and find the perfect pieces that fit both your interior design standards.

Maybe it’s time for some new living room seating, and your partner likes simplicity and clean lines, and you like versatile colored family room furnishings, easily accented with pops of color. What to expect when moving into a rental property

Landlords often require that you fill out a move-in inspection checklist. If you paid a security deposit, then it’s in your best interest to fill one out with your landlord even if he or she doesn’t initiate it.

In the checklist, you’ll mark existing damage in the rental. When you move out, you’ll fill out the same checklist to show what damage is new versus pre-existing. Your landlord should not charge you to repair any damage that was already there.

Enjoy your new home

Home safety checklist for new home owners

To ease this process and avoid finding a costly hazard down the line, it’s important to take a moment to get acquainted with your home, run over a few safety precautions, and make an emergency plan. This checklist will help get you started!

Electrical system 

While you’re still getting to know your home, this is a crucial part to pay attention to. If anything looks odd, it’s best to check it out ASAP to avoid what could become a potentially dangerous fire hazard. Get to know where important features like your meter and fuse box are, and watch them for anything that looks unusual.

Make sure you know how to shut them off in an emergency, although it’s highly recommended you reach out to a professional when dealing with your electrical system. If you don’t know where to start or what to look for, this article can help you identify important features to be watching for and can help you assess fire hazards and risks.

Pipes and water

Know where the shut off is! You almost never think of this until it is an emergency but when your toilet is suddenly flooding or a pipe under your sink bursts late at night, you’ll be grateful you took the extra time to identify where your water shut off is. While you’re giving your new home a good look over, also check for things like rust, corrosion, and visible leakage. It’s good to identify these potential problems and deal with them as soon as possible.


This one is simple – make sure you have them, test them, and monitor them! Both smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are crucial for a safe home. Make sure they are evenly dispersed throughout the entire home and always in working order. While on that note, it also doesn’t hurt to keep a fire extinguisher handy.

Protocol for emergencies

Make a plan! If an emergency occurs, it helps to have important paperwork and other valuables in a fire safe/waterproof locked box. They’ll be safe if the house is on fire or if there is flooding, and will be all kept together and easy to grab in the case of an emergency evacuation. Make a plan with your family of what an emergency evacuation would look like. This might mean installing escape ladders to any window not on ground level and establishing a meeting place. Additionally, if it’s applicable for where you live, it’s important to identify a severe weather shelter.

Make a kit! The basics are a first aid kit, radio, and food and water for each person for three days. The Red Cross has a comprehensive list of what to get together for your emergency kit as well the option to purchase emergency supplies and kits directly from their site.

Protect your home against break-ins and burglary

Two million home burglaries are reported each year in the United States. To help protect your family and your new home, there are simple measures to take. Buy and install an alarm system or a home security system. Install new locks and bolts, especially if your home has had many previous owners or people that might have had access to the home. Use caution leaving spare keys outside and rather leave them with a family member or a trusted neighbor. Lock things like sheds, gates, and garages and don’t leave valuables in cars. Lastly, do not publicize vacations or other times your home will be empty; have a neighbor or friend watch the house, and collect newspaper or mail create the illusion that someone is home. The best way to protect your home is to be proactive.

Miscellaneous hazards

  • If applicable, watch for tripping hazards (loose flooring, poorly lit staircases, etc.) Consider a medical alert system if applicable for those in your home.

That’s why in 2018, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK officially debuted a new set of commercial spots to be featured across locally, across the U.S. and Canada. This not only gets the word out about everything we are doing, but sheds a positive light on the company.

“TWO MEN AND A TRUCK is filled with local move heroes – people who go above and beyond for their customers and their communities, daily,” said Dawn Kroeger, the marketing and communication director at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK. “Given 96% of our customers would refer us, the level of service provided by “The Movers Who Care” is what sets us apart from other moving companies. The new set of commercials feature these move heroes and seek to illustrate how, in days crunched for time and a need for efficiency and quality, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK delivers on all fronts.”

Since the point of these commercials was to highlight all the important things about TWO MEN AND A TRUCK, who would be better to feature in the commercial spots than the wonderful people who work for the brand? All of the actors featured in the spots were TWO MEN AND A TRUCK employees or their families, who put on their acting hats and portrayed a variety of different roles.

We spoke to a few of these TWO MEN AND A TRUCK heavy lifters, turned actors, to get their take on what it was like being on set, and how they felt about being put in the spotlight!

Sherry Campbell – Franchise Marketing Manager at the corporate office in Lansing, Mich.

“It was like being on a big production shoot. They had food and refreshment stations setup throughout the day, my hair and make-up was done by professionals, and there were lights everywhere!”

Did anything happen that you weren’t expecting?

“On the morning of my shoot, which was in Atlanta, it was really cold. We had to act like it was a normal early summer day. Thank goodness for the heaters.”

How long did the process of shooting the commercial take?

“It always takes way more time than you think it should. They’re always adjusting lights and camera angles. And then, you end up doing the same thing over and over.”

How would you say the entire experience went overall?

“I’m not very patient, so sometimes I would get bored waiting for my ‘five minutes of fame’. But all in all, it was a really professional and fun experience. I am glad I was able to be part of the process!”

What was it like being on set?

“Being on the set of the commercial was exciting. Getting to experience how a commercial is made and having your name and face associated with such a huge project is very humbling.”

Did anything happen that you weren’t expecting?

I was only expecting a couple of really quick shots, and then to be done for the day. I wasn’t expecting to have an entire commercial centered around me.”

How long did the process of shooting the commercial take?

“On the morning of the shoot, we arrived around 5:30 a.m. I met the director and the production crew, and that’s when they explained I would be the main focus of the shoot. That was a shock and I got really nervous, but they calmed me down and went through the process of getting into make-up and wardrobe, where the people were great. Then we went onto the set, which was shot all on location. The whole thing took about half a day.”

How would you say the entire experience went overall?

“This whole process was an amazing experience. If someone were to ask me if I would do it again, I would say yes without thinking twice. Everyone from the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK team to the film crew made this one of the most memorable moments in my life.”

What was it like being on set?

2017 Commercial Shoot Photo_184“It was a lot of fun, actually – music, food, laughing, and a whole entourage following me around everywhere I went! I was pretty nervous the first few takes, but everyone was really great at making it a laid back environment so we didn’t come across stoic on camera. At the end of the day, I had a really great time!”

Did anything happen that you weren’t expecting?

“It takes a surprising amount of time to come up with a 15-second commercial, and they took so many takes of the same thing with slight tweaks. It was really neat to see the final product and how it all came together. I had wardrobe, make-up, and lighting all around me for touch-ups between takes, and it took way more takes than you might think. I don’t think you’d guess that small shot took so much thought and time.”

How long did the process of shooting the commercial take?

“We shot every small scene many, many, many times. Sometimes doing the exact same thing, sometimes doing it with a small tweak here or there. Way different than a recorded news segment spot, which is my most common experience on camera. This was an all-day event, and there wasn’t much downtime between scenes. There were a couple times I tried to step aside to respond to an email or speak to someone there, and was quickly called back. Others who weren’t in every scene were able to watch the screenings and relax, but for me, it was go, go, go! That being said, it was a lot of fun.”

How would you say the entire experience went overall?

“Great! It was a super cool experience. I’d do it again in a heartbeat, and what a great reward for the Move Heroes! It was really rewarding to see them get to shine, and I think the commercials turned out really sharp.”

Did anything happen that you weren’t expecting?

“I wasn’t expecting to connect with the director so well. I wasn’t expecting for it to be so community-like and enjoyable, either. Everyone just wanted to have fun, and we did!”

How long did the process of shooting the commercial take?

“It was repetitive, but still fun and laid back. For my commercial shoot, it took about eight hours, but I wasn’t always on camera (and there was a lunch break).”

How would you say the entire experience went overall?

“I feel it went well. We all had a good time, and the commercials turned out fantastic!”

The last thing you want is to handle your move perfectly, only to arrive at your new home and not have utilities turned on. Make sure you call ahead with your local utilities provider to guarantee that when you arrive at your new home, the heat and the electricity are ready to go.

  1. Stay warm!

This might seem like a no-brainer, but it’s worth repeating – bundle up! Harsh winter conditions are no joke, and using multiple layers of warm clothing can make a huge difference if you’re in and out of the house loading your car, or if the door is propped open for the movers.

Another one of winter’s classic obstacles is that the sun is down at an incredibly early time – this comes into play with your movers! Since we like to work around your schedule for your convenience, it’s important the area where movers are operating is properly lit. This prevents movers from navigating through the dark and potentially damaging your items or injuring themselves.

It’s a good idea to ensure there are towels, clothes, or something else handy that can wipe away the snow and muck that gets tracked in from the outside. This will prevent any unwanted slipping and sliding, and will also keep the house nice and clean.

Four DIY Valentine’s Day crafts in four steps or less!

We’re always up for a good DIY day, especially when it comes to holiday crafts. This Valentine’s Day, we’re sharing the love with four super-easy, low-budget projects! When we say inexpensive, we really mean it. Each of these four DIY’s were made from one small, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK moving box!

Here’s a detailed video to use as a reference point when making the DIY crafts!

Be Mine Tags


1 small TWO MEN AND A TRUCK moving box
Scissors or box cutter
Stickers or marker
Step 1: Cut the two all-white box flaps using scissors or a box cutter.

Step 2: Use your ruler to mark triangle shapes on the top left and right of each panel, cut them off.

Step 3: Place alphabet stickers or use a marker to say “Be” on one tag and “Mine” on the other.

Step 4: Carefully use your scissors to poke a hole in the top of your tags. Tie the ribbon in a bow at the top! TIP! We decided to keep the tags in place by hot gluing them to one another. However, this isn’t a must if you’d prefer they hang.

Candy Name Hearts

ValentinesDay-2Celebrate the little loves of your life – your kids!

1 small box
Scissors or box cutter
Paint and paintbrush
Stickers or marker
Hot glue gun

Step 1: Cut out the number of hearts needed for your banner. TIP! Use a heart stencil for evenly shaped hearts.

Step 2: Paint each heart with your desired colors. Be sure to let them fully dry!

Step 3: Use stickers or markers to spell out the names on your candy hearts. For extra fun, include your kids on this project and let them decorate their name heart however they’d like!

Step 4: Use a hot glue gun to secure hearts to the ribbon. Tie a bow at the top and you’re done!

Twine Heart Garland

1 Small box
Scissors or box cutter
Jute and yarn
Hot glue gun

Step 1: Cut small heart shapes from your cardboard box.

Step 2: Use jute, twine, or yarn to wrap around your heart. We secured ours with a hot glue gun.

Step 3: In between the hearts, we created yarn pom-poms for variety. To make a pom-pom, use your palm to wrap the yarn in a circle. After you wrap (we recommend at least 30 times!), use a separate piece of yarn to tie a knot around the center, almost like a belt. You will then want to use your scissors to cut the loop ends on each side of the center tie. Fluff it up and you have a pom-pom! TIP! Watch our video tutorial to see how this is done.

Step 4. Thread the twine through your hearts and pom-poms and you’re garland is complete!

Pom-pom wreath

1 small box
Scissors or box cutter
Hot glue gun

Step 1: Begin by drawing one large heart on the side of your box. Then, draw a slightly smaller one inside of that. Cut along each heart outline.

Step 2: Using the method above, create several pom-poms to cover your heart. We used 17 larger pom-poms to cover our wreath.

Step 3: Secure the poms-poms down using a hot glue gun.

Step 4: Use a piece of yarn at the top of your wreath to create a hook to hang it.
