TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Boxtume Tutorial Part 1: Lightning McQueen

Lightning McQueen.mp4.00_02_56_00.Still001

If you’re looking for a fun DIY Halloween costume, we’ve got you covered! Pick up a TWO MEN AND A TRUCK box and follow these tips for creating the perfect costume — or “boxtume”, as we like to call it.

Lightning McQueen Boxtume

This costume is perfect for the Cars-loving kid in your life. Check out our tutorial on how to make Lightning McQueen, or simply switch out the paint color to make Sandy or Mater.

What you’ll need:

  • TWO MEN AND A TRUCK medium box
  • Red paint
  • Hot glue
  • Scissors
  • Box cutter
  • Ribbon
  • Paper plates
  • Poster board
  • Black marker
  • Googly eyes

Step 1: Assemble the box, loosely taping the top and bottom shut. Paint outside with red paint.

Step 2: Once the paint has dried, remove tape. Touch up paint as needed. Carefully use a box cutter or scissors to remove bottom four folds, as well as three from the top. Leave one fold for the windshield at the front of the costume.

Step 3: Use scissors to poke a hole on both sides of the windshield and on the back of the box. Measure ribbon to your liking for shoulder straps. Tie knots in both ends of the ribbon and push through holes.

Step 4: Time for decals! To make tires, paint four paper plates black and let dry. On a poster board, sketch out two emblems for the sides, as well as the mouth and eye shapes. Use a black marker to add teeth, and silver paint to add details to the tires. Once paint is dried and each piece is cut out, use hot glue to attach each to your boxtume. Use hot glue to place googly-eyes on front windshield.

Finish the boxtume off with a “IM SPEED” license plate, and you’re good to go!

Four DIY Valentine’s Day crafts in four steps or less!

ValentinesDay-4.jpg

-Written by Jessy Herman

We’re always up for a good DIY day, especially when it comes to holiday crafts. This Valentine’s Day, we’re sharing the love with four super-easy, low-budget projects! When we say inexpensive, we really mean it. Each of these four DIY’s were made from one small, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK moving box!

Here’s a detailed video to use as a reference point when making the DIY crafts!

Be Mine Tags

ValentinesDay-1Supplies:

1 small TWO MEN AND A TRUCK moving box
Scissors or box cutter
Ruler
Ribbon
Stickers or marker
Step 1: Cut the two all-white box flaps using scissors or a box cutter.

Step 2: Use your ruler to mark triangle shapes on the top left and right of each panel, cut them off.

Step 3: Place alphabet stickers or use a marker to say “Be” on one tag and “Mine” on the other.

Step 4: Carefully use your scissors to poke a hole in the top of your tags. Tie the ribbon in a bow at the top! TIP! We decided to keep the tags in place by hot gluing them to one another. However, this isn’t a must if you’d prefer they hang.

Candy Name Hearts

ValentinesDay-2Celebrate the little loves of your life – your kids!

Supplies:
1 small box
Scissors or box cutter
Ribbon
Paint and paintbrush
Stickers or marker
Hot glue gun

Step 1: Cut out the number of hearts needed for your banner. TIP! Use a heart stencil for evenly shaped hearts.

Step 2: Paint each heart with your desired colors. Be sure to let them fully dry!

Step 3: Use stickers or markers to spell out the names on your candy hearts. For extra fun, include your kids on this project and let them decorate their name heart however they’d like!

Step 4: Use a hot glue gun to secure hearts to the ribbon. Tie a bow at the top and you’re done!

Twine Heart Garland

ValentinesDay-8Supplies:
1 Small box
Scissors or box cutter
Jute and yarn
Hot glue gun

Step 1: Cut small heart shapes from your cardboard box.

Step 2: Use jute, twine, or yarn to wrap around your heart. We secured ours with a hot glue gun.

Step 3: In between the hearts, we created yarn pom-poms for variety. To make a pom-pom, use your palm to wrap the yarn in a circle. After you wrap (we recommend at least 30 times!), use a separate piece of yarn to tie a knot around the center, almost like a belt. You will then want to use your scissors to cut the loop ends on each side of the center tie. Fluff it up and you have a pom-pom! TIP! Watch our video tutorial to see how this is done.

Step 4. Thread the twine through your hearts and pom-poms and you’re garland is complete!

Pom-pom wreath

ValentinesDay-6Supplies:
1 small box
Scissors or box cutter
Yarn
Hot glue gun

Step 1: Begin by drawing one large heart on the side of your box. Then, draw a slightly smaller one inside of that. Cut along each heart outline.

Step 2: Using the method above, create several pom-poms to cover your heart. We used 17 larger pom-poms to cover our wreath.

Step 3: Secure the poms-poms down using a hot glue gun.

Step 4: Use a piece of yarn at the top of your wreath to create a hook to hang it.

We hope these DIY’s get you in the spirit of Valentine’s Day! Show us your DIY crafts by tagging us on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.

Making a difference by giving back: TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® fall-cause wrap up Part 1

Vietnam Veterans Photos

-Written by Erik Sargent

At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, we’re all about giving back to the communities where we work and live, while making a difference in peoples’ lives. Going above and beyond the moving services we offer, we always look for different ways to provide assistance and care to those who need it, and show why we’ve earned the motto “Movers Who Care®”.

Our founder, Mary Ellen Sheets, made it a staple of the brand to give back to local charities with our time and resources, as it shows we are more than just a moving company. Over the course of more than 30 years, we have not only worked with various charitable organizations all over the country, but have also started our own  charitable programs  centered on giving back.

These campaigns take place during the fall months heading into the holiday season, and include Movers for Military, Movers for Meals, Movers for Mutts, and Truckload of Warmth.

Across our more than 350 locations, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK teams partner with volunteer groups, local businesses, schools, shelters, and nonprofits to assist in helping the mission of these specific campaigns. As each year goes by, we like to highlight some of the work our franchises do in the community with these campaigns.

First up – Movers for Military and Movers for Meals in part one of our fall campaign wrap up!

Movers for Meals

IMG_8606Amy Gladieux, Marketing and Recruiting Manager for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Cleveland

How did your Movers for Meals program go in 2017?

“The response was amazing this year! We did Movers for Meals for the first time in 2016, and this year, we had an additional 100 items donated to the cause. I think the success comes from people who remember about it the year before, and we had exposure in a community paper.”

Who did you work with?

“I’ve been involved with an organization in the fall that collected food for the past five or six years, and I thought it was a good opportunity to partner with them for Movers for Meals. One of the main events was with the local chamber who has a bowling event where people can earn extra raffle tickets for donations they bring to the event. I’ve had pretty good success partnering with libraries, also.”

Sarah Bullard, Sales & Marketing Manager for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK North Mississippi

Movers For Meals 2017Who did you work with during the process?

“We partnered with several different types of businesses such as local apartment communities, storage facilities, and realtor groups. Many of which we were well acquainted with due to our involvement with the chambers in our area. One of the best locations that we were able to partner with actually ended up being a local apartment complex called Oak Hallow, who contacted us to participate for a second year! They loved the response they had from their residents in the previous year, and were eager to help us once again. We were thrilled to see their excitement and desire to partner with us for such a great cause!

Why Movers for Meals?

“We decided to run Movers for Meals after becoming aware of a huge need for canned goods and nonperishables by a local organization called “Heartland Hands”. We were first introduced to this organization through our involvement with several of the Chambers in our community. Movers for Meals was the perfect campaign to help our location impact our community in their time of need.”

Movers for Military

Eugenia Parlow, Regional Sales and Marketing for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK in Tampa, Ocala, The Villages, and Pasco County, FL

IMG_0200How long have you been running the Movers for Military program?

“We’ve been doing this program for six years, and have made it a part of our continuing efforts to aid homeless veterans and their families. [We worked with] schools, universities, daycares, golf courses, and real-estate offices. We collected 13,000 items.”

Why do you think it’s important to run these campaigns?

“It is very important to continue our efforts in aiding our veterans. Unfortunately, some veterans have given so much that they are unable to fathom what is being done for them. We need to show them we appreciate what they have gone through.”

Stefanie Shook, Marketing Manager for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Pasadena, CA

IMG_0693Why did you choose Movers for Military?

“We had a lot of success running it last year, and we have built a great relationship with our charity, New Directions for Veterans. They are very active in the community, and do a lot of good for the homeless veteran population in Los Angeles, which happens to be the largest in the nation.”

How did this year’s campaign go?

“The campaign was a huge success, and it really got our staff pumped up! It was exciting to see the donations pour in. Last year, we had six donation partners and collected 1,800 items. This year, we had 27 donation partners, and collected 6,700 items plus an additional $1,300 in gift cards!”

Jade Tinner, Marketing Lead for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Fort Worth, TX

Why did you choose to run Movers for Military?

“We chose to run Movers for Military in our Fort Worth locations because we have a large amount of veteran organizations, military bases, and organizations to end homelessness in the area. It just seemed like the perfect fit. Also, we have several veterans on our team.”

Who did you work with for your campaign?

“From start to finish, we worked very closely with the Tarrant county Homeless Coalition and Catholic Charities Fort Worth. Both organizations have their own veterans’ initiatives working to help homeless veterans transition to housing and employment.”

Charlene Bush, Marketing Manager for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Ann Arbor, Brighton, Brownstown, and Oakland SW, MI

Movers for militaryWhy Movers for Military?

Both myself and Alan Oversmith, our franchisee, come from military families, so we were both very passionate about running this campaign. In addition, we have veterans that now work at each of our locations as movers or drivers. This fall campaign was a great way to both honor them and show our appreciation for their service to our country.”

Who did you partner with during this process?

“We worked with the Livingston County Veterans Service Agency, Downriver for Veterans, Michigan Ability Partners, and Vets Returning Home. We organized a “Stuff a Truck” event in each of our locations. The organizations, the local chambers, and some local radio stations helped us to get the word out about each event.”

Andrew Marrotte, Marketing Manager for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK Northwest-Phoenix and Southwest-Phoenix, AZ

IMG_0257How did the campaign go overall compared to previous years?

“When all was said and done, there was more than 10,000 donations for the cause. Our location had more donations this year than ever before, and our staff is really proud to have been a part of it.”

What was the overall response to your efforts?

“There was a big event that was put on for the recipients of the donations at the Air Force base here. All of the active duty military in the area were invited, and over 1,600 people left at the end of the day with full stomachs and trash bags full of presents for their family members. On top of the toys and food were bounce houses, face painting, cookie decorating, and picture booths. Needless to say, the response was pure joy.”

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® moving and storage solutions to prepare for the holiday season!

TMAT464.jpg

December is in full swing, the snow is falling (for some of us), and the holiday cheer is abundant which can only mean one thing – Christmas is near!

If you haven’t already, it’s time to get a jump on your Christmas preparation! Get those decorations out of storage, get your furniture ready and arranged for your holiday parties, and make sure you are ready to spread that Christmas spirit. While TWO MEN AND A TRUCK is known for our outstanding local moving services, we also specialize in home moving, and can help assist you with anything you may need as you prepare for Christmas.

Having your home looking festive and ready for the holidays is a must, and there’s a lot more into decorating than you might think. From getting the lights and trees out of the attic to making sure you have your furniture in the right place – and enough furniture for everyone – there’s a lot of moving involved, and it’s important to maximize the space in your home.

What better way to prepare for all of this than with a special, Christmas-themed TWO MEN AND A TRUCK song on how to prepare for holiday moving?

We’ve also put together an expert list of moving tips for you to follow to make sure everything is on track and ready to go. If you need help with your home moving during the holiday, be sure to reach out to your local TWO MEN AND A TRUCK franchise and see how they can help move you forward this Christmas!

Rearranging your furniture

This comes as no surprise, but your Christmas tree and other holiday decorations can take up additional space you don’t normally have to account for during the rest of the year, which can lead to your furniture needing to be shuffled around to make room.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK’s professionally trained moving teams can come to your house and help get that large couch or table in exactly the right spot so you’re able to properly accommodate your guests.

Have extra furniture available!

Christmas parties can include a lot of extended family and extra guests, and making sure everyone has a place to sit is important. If you have extra furniture in an attic, storage facility, or out in the garage, our movers would be more than willingly to help bring it inside and place it accordingly.

Make sure to have extra boxes

Storage is at a premium during the holidays, and you want to make sure you have enough boxes to safely put everything away. It’s better to have the boxes and not need them then to need them and not have them, so make sure you’re prepared to put away all of your lights, ornaments, and other Christmas decorations.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK offers a wide variety of moving and specialty boxes, and we can deliver these right to your home at your convenience!

Gift delivery

Did you make a special gift purchase for someone this year such as a large piece of furniture, appliance, or other heavy object that you aren’t sure how you’ll transport? You’ve come to the right place!

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK now offers a pickup and delivery service to handle this very problem. We can pick up the large object you’ve bought, deliver it right to your home (or wherever needed), and help bring it inside and set it up.

This eliminates the hassle – and potential danger – of trying to do it yourself, allowing you to shift your focus elsewhere!

Kid-friendly cardboard DIY crafts for the holidays

HolidayDIY1

-Project by Cat Armstrong and Anna Stephens

The holidays are the perfect time to stay in and craft with your little ones. These crafts are simple, low cost , and offer tons of creative freedom for your kids! Grab your cardboard boxes and let’s get started! Read our tutorials below and watch our videos to see every step.

Mitten Banner

HolidayDIY2(Cover)

This is the perfect craft to hang over any fireplace, staircase, or porch! You’ll want to buy a bit of fleece fabric and various winter accessories. Some of the things we used were ribbon, buttons, pom poms, mistletoe, winter berries, and sequins. Cut out a piece of cardboard in the shape of a mitten to act as the backbone of the mitten. Next, cut out shapes of the mitten in the fleece. The rest is up to you to decorate however you would like! Allow it to dry, then use clothespins to hang up on a string of yarn or twine.

Cardboard Ornaments

Your kids will love making their own ornaments to decorate the Christmas trees! These cost less than $5 each and are super simple.

HolidayDIY3

Ornament #1 and #2: Mitten and Candy Cane

First, cut out the shape of a mitten and a candy cane in cardboard. Next, cut a string of red and white yarn. Use hot glue to secure the place where you’ll begin. For the candy cane, wrap the string around the entire candy cane shape. For the mitten, wrap the string around the cardboard until you cover the thumb portion of the shape, then cut the string. Hot glue where you began again, and keep wrapping until the mitten is completely covered in yarn. Hook a paperclip in the yarn or glue a paperclip on the back.

HolidayDIY4

Ornament #3: Christmas Tree

You only need small green pom poms for this cute little ornament. Cut out a simple Christmas tree shape in cardboard. Then, simply hot glue the poms in a row, including along the sides in order to completely cover the tree. Glue a paper clip on the back and hang it up! How sweet!

HolidayDIY5

Ornament #4: Flashy Star

For those of you who like a little bling, this is for you. Just cut a star shape in cardboard, then cover with glue adhesive spray. Lay it in glitter and shake off excess glitter. Spray it again, then lay it in sequins. Who doesn’t love double-layered sparkle?

Step 3: Glue on scales using a hot glue gun. Start from the bottom and overlap them as you move up.

_DSC_0131.jpg

Step 4: Trim the ends of the scales so you can see the shape of the original printed mask. This includes the holes in the eyes.

Step 5: Cut out two rectangles from white glitter paper, then cut out one from blue glitter paper. Fold them in an accordion fashion so they have creases.

_DSC_0143.jpg

Step 6: Using a hot glue gun, secure the white pieces of paper on the sides of the mask. Then, glue the blue piece of paper to the top of the mask. Next, glue on two identical strips of ribbon on both sides of the mask.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Halloween “Boxtume” ideas Part 1: Unicorn

Boxtume 1 - 1

-Project by Anna Stephens and Cathryn Armstrong

At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, we look forward to celebrating Halloween each year. It’s a chance for us to use our moving boxes as blank canvases for beautiful and unique costumes, or as we call them, “boxtumes.” This is the first of three blogs in our Halloween “boxtume” series, stay tuned for a few other fun options!

Unicorn “Boxtume”

Are you looking for a cute Halloween costume that will be sure to stand out, but doesn’t cost a fortune? We used a small TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® box – $15 of craft materials – and a little magic to create this dazzling costume.

Watch our video to see every step or follow along in eight easy steps below!

Step 1: Tape tops and bottoms of box shut. Draw a circular hole with a pencil on the top and bottom of the box and cut out the hole with a box cutter. Adjust for body size accordingly. Paint the body with pink spray paint and let dry.

DSC_0034DSC_0042

Step 2: Print out the stencil of the unicorn head. This comes in three pages and is available to download. This is the link for the neck and eyes, and this is the link for the head. Print these at home, use scissors to make cuts where cutting is indicated by the dashed lines, and tape the pieces together. Trace the fully taped head onto an extra piece of cardboard with a pencil and cut out using a box cutter.

DSC_0049DSC_0050DSC_0056DSC_0059

Step 3: Spray paint the head and body pink. Spray paint the horn with glitter silver. Be sure to cover the edge of the horn with tape so you have a clean line.

DSC_0061DSC_0077

Step 4: Cut streamers for the tail and mane. For the mane, ours varied from about three inches to six inches long. The strands for the tail were about 18 inches long. Secure the tail and mane strands with a glue stick.

DSC_0083DSC_0102

Step 5: Cut out eyes from the stencil provided, color it in, and glue onto the head using a glue stick. Use loops of duct tape to secure the stars on the body.

DSC_0069DSC_0091

Step 6: Cut out a slit about eight inches long that runs from the top of the box to the front face using the box cutter. Slide the head into this slit and secure with tape in the inside of the box.

DSC_0108.jpg

Step 7: Cut four small slits on the top of the box for the straps using a box cutter. Feed the ribbon through the top of the slit and create a knot underneath to fasten the ribbon. Complete this for all of the four slits and adjust ribbon length for size of shoulders.

Step 8: Step into your unicorn and steal the spotlight!
