When it comes to home moving, there are several tips and tricks we’ve learned over the years to not only make a move easier and more efficient, but save you a little money, too!

An important factor to consider when trying to save money on your next home move is time. Time plays a huge factor with most moving companies, as local moves are typically charged by the hour (this excludes long-distance moving). If you’re able to cut down on the amount of time movers spend at each home, you’re certainly going to cut down on the final bill.

Here are a few helpful tips to eliminate move-day stress, cut down on time, and save you some cash!

Be honest when completing your moving estimate

It may seem obvious, but it’s worth mentioning – it’s important to be honest with the moving company when completing your estimate. Whether you’re completing a virtual in-home consultation, someone is arriving at your home to do the estimate, or you’re doing it over the phone, you want to be as accurate as possible with the staff so they can accurately prepare for your home.

If you fail to mention certain items (especially large pieces of furniture), amount of boxes you have, or aren’t clear on the size of your home, this could add time to the move and require them to make adjustments on the fly.

Disassemble all beds and furniture

Many types of furniture will be disassembled when they are loaded onto the moving truck, so the less time your movers have to spend doing this, the less time they will need to spend on the move overall.

If everything is taken apart when they arrive, they can load it right on to the truck and move on to the next item.

Pack all of your items away

Packing is crucial to the success of any move, and it’s up to the customer to ensure items are packed when moving day arrives. If your items are all packed away and ready when the movers arrive, they can immediately begin loading the moving truck which will speed up the move dramatically.

Organize your belongings

If at all possible, place boxes and even furniture you’re able to move, in a central area like the garage or by the front door, so your movers don’t have to go travel throughout the home to retrieve your belongings. If everything is in one, easily accessible area, the movers can easily grab and load the truck.

Be prepared

Above all else, be prepared. Many of our frontline team members have mentioned that nothing beats good planning when it comes to moving day, and doing so will eliminate any last minute change ups, eliminate the need to add more time, and again – save you money!
