Regardless of the size of your move, or where you’re moving to or from, packing and relocating from one place to the next is still a stressful process!

Apartment moving can present some challenges, too. From finding roommates to learning the rules and regulations of the apartment complex you are moving into, navigating stairs and organizing your belongings into your new, sometimes smaller space, can present a unique set of obstacles.

We’ve developed some helpful tips for our customers to use when moving into a new rental that are sure to make the moving process much easier on you.

Follow along!

Questions, questions, questions!

Be sure to find out everything possible from your landlord or apartment office, and ask questions on anything you feel is important. Everything from what utilities are included to what amenities are available, what perks are included, the best way to pay your rent, etc.

Also – be sure to look at reviews from past tenants to get a feel for what the management is like at your new complex and what you can expect as a new tenant.

Get a head start on packing

One of the biggest  tips we can offer customers is to start your packing early. If you get an early jump on packing for your move, the rest becomes so much easier and will help to alleviate some stress leading up to move day.

Figure out what important items are going with you to your new apartment, what you’ll throw out or donate, and go from there. Also be sure to label your boxes clearly so the movers know where the boxes belong in your new place, and when you begin unpacking at your new home, you know exactly what’s in each box.

Purchase renter’s insurance

If you don’t already have renter’s insurance prior to moving into a new apartment, you’ll want to take care of this. Renter’s insurance protects your belongings from unfortunate incidents like burglary or damage from fires or leaks, and will provide you with the peace of mind that your items are safe at all times.

Set up utilities ahead of time

The last thing you want is to show up to your new apartment and not have anything work. More times than not, the water bill is included in an apartment lease, but the rest – gas, electricity, cable, and internet – is up to the tenant.

Be sure to get these services set up well in advance, giving your providers the move in date so services are turned on when you’re ready for them.

Clean up your old place

Although it’s time to say goodbye to your old home, you don’t want to leave it a mess. Going through and doing a thorough cleaning will not only save you from any necessary charges or complaints, but it can also help you spot anything you may have accidentally left behind before the move.

Gather all details of your move

Many apartments have a certain set of guidelines that people must follow when moving into a complex, from figuring out where to park, special move in hours, and even elevator reservations if you’re relocating to a high rise.

Be sure to find out these details from your landlord or apartment office, and also ask about the following: what utilities you need, when to pick up your keys, what elevator regulations are, and when the first rent check is due.
