Mark List- Human Resources

Mark is the human resources intern here at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®/INTERNATIONAL, Inc. He is the intern I am in contact with most because of our overlapping projects and proximity within the office. He is very easy to work with and has been a friendly face to everyone.  Mark is always seen around the office chatting with co-workers or answering phones with a kind voice. I spoke with Mark about himself and his experience so far with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®/INTERNATIONAL, Inc.

MarkQ: Tell me a little bit about yourself and your background?

A:  I grew up on the north side of Lansing and went to Laingsburg High School. I attend college at Grand Valley State University where I study business and run cross country and track. In my free time I love to read, write, and spend time outdoors.

Q: What made you apply for an internship with TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® ?

A: My mom works here so I kind of grew up around TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®. But beyond that, I really love the core values and when I heard about the internship program, I definitely wanted to apply.

Q: Can you please briefly describe your usual day to day tasks at the office?

A: I do a lot of payroll tasks, things related to benefit enrollment. I go on site and do safety spot checks, work up updating employee handbooks and writing potential policies and procedures.  My duties vary from day to day.

Q: What has been the most valuable thing you have learned here so far?

A: I have learned the value of getting to know all of the people you are working with. When you are close with the people you work with, it provides a great resource for help when you can just run across the hall and ask someone. For example, when I answer the phones and am unsure where to direct a call, I feel comfortable running across the hall and asking Cindy Wilhelm, (Executive assistant to the President and CEO) and she will always direct me.

Q:  Who would you say has been your best teacher or mentor here and why?

A: Definitely Brittany Ishman, (Human Resources Support Specialist).  She loves her job and is an amazing manager. She is always giving me fun things to do, keeping me on task, and helps guide me through everything.

Q: How do you think you will be able to apply what you learn this summer to school, future interviews/jobs or life in general?

A:   As far as life skills, I will definitely be able to apply my enhanced understanding of the importance of getting to know people you might not have gotten to know otherwise.  As far as job or interview skills, I gained a lot of knowledge in the human resources field and how meaningful it is to be in the position to give people a chance. I also learned how to work with all types of people, both in customer service and in employee settings.  I think being able to see both sides of things and how they work together will benefit me in the future.

Q:  Has your internship taught you anything about human resources that surprised you?

A:  Yes, I was able to see how much HR actually does that I didn’t realize before, and also how fun the HR field is.

Q: What do you believe is the best aspect of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® as a large international company?

A:  I love the people side of things. They really take care of their customers and their employees and always show how much they genuinely care about both.

Q: What is one goal you hope to accomplish this summer/what do you hope to take away from your internship?

A: One of my goals is to be part of HR development and actually write up a policy that will be implemented in the future.  I also just want to take away a better understanding of HR in general and what they do.
