Transitioning your little ones: new school, home, and friends

Written by Nicole Harrison

The beginning of a new school year is usually filled with excitement. However, the first day at a new school is a different story, and in some cases, the anticipation and excitement is outweighed by anxiety and nerves. Your child’s feelings on attending a new school may vary based on his or her age – they may feel anger, resentment, excitement, or nervousness. Regardless of how old your kids are, there are a handful of tactics to help them adjust to this change.

Orientation/school tour. This is easily one of the most important steps to do with your kids. Make time to attend new student orientation, or if there isn’t one, schedule a school tour together. Both of you will have the opportunity to learn more about the school, class structure, curriculum, and get any questions answered. Whether going to an orientation or scheduling a tour, you and your kids will become familiar with the new school before their first day. This is also a perfect time to meet the teacher. A few familiar faces and knowing where to go will make the first days much easier for your child. It may seem silly, but we promise, it will make a huge difference and will immediately make them more comfortable during the transition if they can navigate through the hallways, and find their way around with ease. Spend time learning about the new school. Are there any fun facts about the new school? When was it built? How many students go there? What type of electives do they offer? Spend time learning as much as you can about the new school. The more you learn before the first day, the more prepared your kids will be.

TMAT322Stock up on school supplies. To ease your child’s nerves, take them back-to-school shopping to stock up on school supplies they need. Most schools have a list of supplies their students will need for each grade. If the school hasn’t provided a list, contact them and ask for a list of supplies your child will need most.

Explore the playground. Before your kids’ first day, take them up to the playground, spend time playing and making them comfortable with the new set up. Find activities they like such as the swings or monkey bars and spend time playing with them. That way, when they go off to recess they will be familiar with the new playground and will most likely branch out and join other students participating in activities they love!

Prepare for the first day. Before school starts, allow your child a trial run of a school day. Practice walking to the bus stop, walking the route, or driving to school. The evening before the first day of school, run through last minute items. Where is the bus stop? What time does the bus come? What is the bus number? Pack a special lunch for the first day. Spend this time sifting through the remaining items that haven’t been addressed. If your little one seems particularly nervous for his or her first day, consider taking them to school versus riding the bus.

Get involved in your kids’ school. If your children are young, it helps to get involved. Network with other parents, get to know their teacher and classmates on a personal level. If you’re able to, volunteering your time is a great way to make your son or daughter feel more comfortable in a new environment, and they will be able to see a familiar face in class.

Set up play dates. Shortly after your kids start at their new school, set up some play dates with their classmates. This is a great way for them to build relationships with their classmates and to help them make friends at school. There is a fine line between supporting them and putting too much pressure on them, make sure your kids feel supported at all times.

Participate in extracurricular activities. Are there activities in your new community that your child has an interest in? If your son enjoys martial arts, try to find a program he can participate in. If your daughter enjoys swimming, try to find a swim team she can join. Extracurricular activities are an added bonus for you and your kids to become acquainted with the community.

Attending a new school can be stressful for children and parents, hopefully these pointers will aid the transition. We encourage parents to keep their children involved throughout the process, without being too pushy or making them step too far outside their comfort zones.

Wrapping up Movers for Moms®, 230,000 items collected in 2015!

Movers for Moms® 2015 has officially come to a close!

At TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, we believe every mother deserves to be thought of on Mother’s Day, regardless of her circumstancm4mes. Because of that, we came up with the Movers for Moms® program eight years ago, and it runs as our annual spring program. Our franchises team up with local schools, businesses, and other organizations to collect essential care items for mothers in need who are forced to stay in domestic abuse or homeless shelters around the time of Mother’s Day. Our franchises distribute collection boxes around the community to gather the items, and deliver them to their local shelter partners on or before Mother’s Day weekend.

The Movers for Moms® program continues to grow year after year. It was first created with just 20 Michigan franchises and eight years later, we’re proud to say our franchises have collected more than 600,000 items for moms in need over the years! This year alone, our fantastic franchises collected more than 230,000 items for delivery to local shelters!

Movers for Moms® success is built on the generosity of local communities coming together to support at-risk moms. We want to thank everyone who has generously acted as m4m5a donation drop off location, our customers who so thoughtfully give items to the cause and support their local women’s and homeless shelters, and to our businesses and schools who work so hard to collect items for local moms!

We’re proud to live out our core value of giving back to the community, not just when running our annual Movers for Moms® program, but all year long.

The photos illustrate the impact Movers for Moms® not only has on moms in need, but on the entire community as they come together to support those in need.

Movers for Moms® 2015: Moving moms forward this Mother’s Day

Written by Nicole Harrison

This is my favorite time of year to work for TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®. Exciting things happen from March to May when Movers for Moms® brings individuals across the country together. Movers for Moms® is a program seeking to make life easier for at-risk women who are lead to stay in shelters on Mother’s Day as a result of domestic violence or homelessness.

Each year, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® locations across the country collect donations for women and deliver the items to local women’s and family shelters on or just before Mother’s Day. Each franchise location partners with local shelters, schools, and community organizations to collect items to make Mother’s Day special for moms in need. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® locations collect donations from mid-March through the weekend of Mother’s Day.Movers for moms

Movers for Moms® is an initiative created by TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® eight years ago to provide moms who need it most with a little something to brighten their holiday. Each TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® location participates in the program — that means more than 250 franchises are working together and supporting hundreds of shelters across the 39 states in which we are present!

Movers for Moms® 2015 is well underway! We have high expectations to make this year the most successful one yet and an overall goal of collecting and delivering more than 250,000 items to moms across the country. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® lives Giving Back to the Community core value

Written by Lindsay Dow

Giving back to the community is where our hearts lie. So much in fact, that we not only developed one charitable program to support those in need, we created FIVE. One national program that every franchise in our 38 states run during the spring months, and four optional programs our franchises can run locally during the fall season.

Each of these programs consist of the same concept: give back to a specific group of people in need, in our local communities.

Being the Movers Who Care®, and having access to critical resources such as movers to do the heavy lifting, and trucks to do the hauling, it just makes sense!

Here’s what we do:

Movers for momsMovers for Moms®: Our national program that runs each spring, from March to May. This program gives back to mothers in need! Franchises partner with local businesses, organizations, and schools to collect essential care items for mothers living in homeless or domestic abuse shelters locally. Items collected depend on what the shelters need, however they often range from soaps and shampoos, to child care necessities.

398748_MoversforMeals_FinalMovers for Meals: This food collection effort runs each fall and collects food for local pantries and homeless shelters. It is coordinated the same way as our Movers for Moms® collection. Franchises partner with local businesses, organizations, and schools for a specific period of time, sort, box, and deliver all items to their recipient partner.

PrintMovers for Military: We are proud to give back to our veterans and local military families! This program is run in local markets and franchises partner with schools, businesses, and organizations to collect essential, everyday items Veteran’s need most. This program runs each fall, and donations are delivered to homeless Veteran’s shelters and families in need around the                                                 time of Veteran’s Day.

398748_MoversforMutts_FinalMovers for Mutts: We also care about our furry friends. When franchises run this program each fall, they partner with local pet shops, businesses, and schools to collect items shelters need most to care for homeless animals.

PrintTruckload of Warmth: This program is popular among the cold-weather states! This fall program entails collecting warm, new and gently-used clothing for homeless shelters and rescue missions locally. Franchises partner with the community and deliver these items to the recipient shelters just in time for the cold weather to hit.

In 2014, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® was proud to deliver more than 220,000 items to mothers in need across the country through the Movers for Moms effort! The four fall charitable programs collected thousands of items for Veterans, pets, and those in need around the country!

We can’t wait to kick off the Movers for Moms® program in March! If you’re interested in becoming a collection partner, please visit to reach out to the franchise closest to you. Or, email

Movers for Moms® 2013

Written by Claire Schneider

It’s an exciting time at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® lately as we ramp up our Movers for Moms® program once again! We are very passionate about our Core Values and Movers for Moms® is a big part of them.

What is Movers for Moms®?Movers For Moms

Movers for Moms® is a program that was started by TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® nearly five years ago because we not only wanted to give to charity, but also be a part of the cause. Movers for Moms® is based around the communities where our franchisees are located and is focused on making life easier for less fortunate women, who are forced to stay in shelters on Mother’s Day. Our goal is to make sure their day is special as well.

“Among industrialized nations, the United States has the largest number of homeless women and children. Not since the Great Depression have so many families been without homes.”

More than 100 TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® locations across the country have partnered with schools to begin collecting items for mothers in need. Our TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® locations will then pick up the items and deliver them to their shelter partners just in time for Mother’s Day.

How you can help

It’s simple! All you have to do is bring your donated items to a participating TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® location near you. Typical donation items may include: soaps, hair styling products, shampoos and conditioners, pillows, blankets, slippers and basic essential items.

We will take care of the rest!

Getting kids involved

Movers for Moms® is a great way to teach kids how important it is to give back to the communities in which we live. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® wants to thank all the schools that are participating in the program this year. We have seen tremendous growth in the past year and now have 420 schools taking part in the program, compared to 200 last year. We could not have made this program what it is today without them!

Movers for Moms

We especially want to thank KinderCare for their involvement with Movers for Moms® this year. KinderCare works hard to improve the lives of children in communities where we live and work. With the expertise that comes with caring for and educating hundreds of thousands of children nationally, KinderCare has a unique understanding of child development, early childhood education, parenting and teaching. They understand the needs of children, families and communities.

If KinderCare sounds like the perfect environment for your child to grow, join KinderCare for their Open House Tuesday, April 23 and let their community show you what makes this place one of a kind. Sign up the week of 4/21 and get $100 off tuition. Their Open House provides the chance to tour their center, meet the teachers, talk with other parents and engage in family-fun activities. KinderCare Learning Centers are excited to show you their nationally recognized education program as well as the child-specific focus their teachers bring to the center. To learn more or find a location near you, please visit

Thank you KinderCare for your support in the Movers for Moms® program!

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Gives Back to the Community

This month at TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® we have focused on our core value of giving back to the community.  Whether it’s donating a move or raising money for a good cause, we believe in supporting our communities and helping people move forward.

TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® has not only seen success with the annual Movers for Moms® program, but we are excited about the $2 million worth of moving services we donated this year. There is nothing better than knowing we made a difference in the communities around us.

Franchisee Jason Judson

One of our franchise owners Jason Judson from St. Louis, Mo., said it best:

“Our community is the reason we wake up every day and come to work. If it wasn’t for our community, we would not have a thriving business and be able to employ so many great people.”

You don’t need to be a part of a big company to be able to give back to your community. Here are some great ideas of how to give back:

  • Donate clothing: One of the easiest ways to give back is to donate clothing you are no longer using. We all have those pieces of clothing pushed way back in our closet that has not seen the light of day in some time. Instead of just leaving it there to collect dust, take it to your local Salvation Army or Goodwill. Just remember to make sure they are washed before you donate them; it will be much appreciated!
  • Volunteer: Many people cringe when they hear the word volunteer, but it doesn’t have to be something boring or dirty. Instead, think of your skills and what you have to offer (we are all good at something!). If you are athletic, look into volunteering at one of your local community centers to teach kids about sports or check out your local Humane Society and see if they need someone to play with the animals or walk the dogs. If you are more on the artistic side, call a nursing home to see if they would like to have a musician come in and play music for everyone.
  • Send greetings: So many people are having a hard time and just need some cheering up. A fun and easy thing to do is to work with a shelter and make cards for the kids there. This will be an encouraging and positive moment they will remember for days to come. You could also include something small and fun like stickers with your card. There are also programs like, which provide a simple way to just say thank you to our troops. It may seem small and simple but it means a lot to them.

These are just a couple of things you can do to get involved and support your community. Check out these great pictures from some of the charity events the TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system has recently been part of.

Movers for Moms Success

Written by: Nick

It has been a crazy week for the marketing department, but all of the stress we dealt with was trumped by one number: 115,000. Any elementary school kid would widen their eyes at that number… and that’s exactly what we did. It’s hard to imagine 115,000 of anything. That’s why we were blown away when a report came in. It said our locations had collected and delivered over 115,000 donations for Movers for Moms®To put that into perspective, our participating locations collected, on average 1,150 items for their women’s shelter partner. Our locations in Michigan collected approximately 25,000 items. Needless to say, we owe everyone that participated a HUGE thank you for making the program a monumental success. We love doing good things and making people feel good. So take a look at these feel-good pictures from a few of our collections:
